About the Book

José de la Luz y Caballero (11 de julio de 1800, La Habana, Cuba-22 de junio de 1862, La Habana) fue uno de los pilares de una pedagogía y de un pensamiento esencialmente nacional. Desempeñó una inmensa obra como maestro, investigador, filósofo y con el bien ganado prestigio entre sus coetáneos de ser un formador de juventudes y conciencias.

Su obra más conocida y valorada es la pedagógica. Desde muy joven quedó deslumbrado con la impronta del padre Varela, del cual tomó para siempre su afán de querer reformar y cambiar el método educativo caduco de la enseñanza colonial, basado en la rígida escolástica, dentro de la cual la memorización a ultranza ofendía la inteligencia de los estudiantes.

Como Varela, preconizaba la experimentación y el método científico, dio gran valor a la enseñanza de la física y la química, en auge tras la difusión del faro que representaba para ellos el Iluminismo francés y el método cartesiano para el conocimiento de materias y el mundo, absorbiendo lo más avanzado del conocimiento universal.

Luz y Caballer decía que el deber del maestro era inculcarles a los alumnos que pensaran por sí mismos. Consideraba como concepción pedagógica que el punto de partida del conocimiento era la experiencia y la observación. Para él el método experimental era el único productivo y único verdaderamente analítico. Así inició una crítica contra el sistema de Educación secundaria vigente y en varios artículos analizó detenidamente los problemas de ese nivel de enseñanza, planteando con total claridad la conveniencia de ajustar la enseñanza de las diferentes asignaturas a las necesidades del país.
