About the Book

Occupy My Life is a modern wayward epic that was sparked by the Occupy Movement in 2011, which served as the catalyst to get Mike Porter out of the house, and into the streets. This is the first installment of a new series following the adventures of Mike Wayward Porter, his faithful dog Radar, and all the fantastic folks they encounter along the way. In this Jack Kerouac-esque tale, based on true events, inhibitions are thrown into the winds as Mike carries the spirit of adventure across country for a life-changing, perspective altering experience that pushes the envelope of what we think we know about society and necessity. For those that follow Mike's travels already, now is your chance to see how the spark that ignited a new way of life began. Once purged of nearly all his possessions, he sets sail for adventure. From the tear gas infused streets of Occupy Oakland, to the freezing streets of our nation's capital for Occupy DC, the obstacles encountered along the way set the stage for the triumph of overcoming them. Turn that page as the escapades expand to include the deep south, Texas, Vegas, and wherever it is they are called to along the way while embracing a completely new lifestyle in unfamiliar territory. With no money to his name, intrigue starts to build as the caravan full of first year, rookie travelers, are thrown in headfirst to learn the tricks of the trade laid out by generations of travelers and free spirits before them. Come along as comfort zones are pushed to their limits and rewarded with bountiful cosmic blessings, and synchronicities bestowed by The Universe abound to guide the way! See the transition from a mild-mannered Bay Area salesman working for the man, into the overzealous 24 year old protester with a knack for stirring the pot and throwing a wrench in the gears of a corrupt and unjust system, landing him in hot water and in a few pairs of cuffs along the way. Sparks of recognition start to fly when Mike and his road dawg's are introduced to the counter-culture of hippies, gypsy's, gutter-punks, and train-hoppers as they begin initiation rights to join the ranks of the Dirty Kids Universe. With no regard for typical first world amenities "required" to travel abroad and see the world, it's no holds bar on the open road. So come broaden your horizons as Mike broadens his perspectives, steals some faces, pries open his third eye, and breaks on through to the other side to embrace his new Family in the woods and lovin' everyone along the way! Tune in, drop out, and most importantly, spiral on down the long and winding road that puts into perspective how we view the transient community as a whole. Paved by the path of minimalism and activism, take a ride as the Spiral Caravan guides you through spark that ignited the fire 4 years ago, and has continued to light the way ever since. Creating the rubber-trampin', sign flyin', gas juggin', dumpster divin', drum playin, forest frolickin', face stealin', Nic at Nite lifestyle that embodies the dying dream of true, unadulterated freedom. If you're inspired by these journey's, the author encourages each and every one of you to get off of the couch and into the streets!!!! Spiral Out
About the Author: Mike Wayward Porter has been wandering the roads of America since 2011. He lives in Northern California during the warm months on a sustainable farm with his 3 dogs. After moving out to the San Francisco bay area from Utah at the age of 19 on a whim, he never looked back. After about 6 years of putzing around, working for the man, he threw himself off of the couch and into the streets when the Occupy Movement hit. After camping at the Oakland Commune for a few weeks, he found himself torn between two worlds: the first was the traditional 9-5 sales job where he was making decent money. The second was a life of unpredictability and adventure. He decided to make a drastic change that once again, catapulted him out of his comfort zone, and sent him across country to pursue the latter of the two. Along his journey's throughout the years, he has driven coast to coast 4x, and from Canada to Guatemala, where he landed a gig running a small bar. He has never embarked for a journey with more than $100 in his pocket, so he makes money along the way however he can, playing his drums in major cities, and teaming up with his road crew in order to pull together the funds needed to get from A to B. It was here that he truly grasped and recognized his full potential to tune into the whispering guidance that The Universe lays out for him. In 2013, his trip entailed a brief visit to British Columbia, and swooping back home along the scenic route through Yellowstone and Burning Man. Most recently he drove to Florida and back in early 2014, introducing a good friend to the lifestyle, which inspired him to free as many people from monotony as possible in the future. He's still blazing trails every winter, and shows no signs of slowing down in the near future especially since he acquired a 30' RV for this latest go-around. He recently embarked upon his most recent journey to hit all 48 states plus Canada. There will be a small documentary/webisode series filmed along this trip covering the counter-culture of street kids and travelers in the hopes of inspiring folks to get out there and embrace the unknown wonder of the road. They will also be feeding the homeless out of the RV and documenting the recent surge of police protests.
