About the Book

This was the only novel written by the famous British screenwriter, director and producer, SIDNEY GILLIAT. Originally titled CATCH AS CATCH CAN, the book was unfinished and unedited at the time of his death although plans were being made for its publication on completion. It was recently edited and completed at the invitation of SIDNEY GILLIAT'S daughter, the writer JOANNA RUSSELL, by the novelist and playwright TERENCE BRADY. The title was also recently altered to OFF THE RAILS to prevent confusion with similarly entitled works.
About the Author: Sidney Gillliat was born in Stockport, Cheshire on 15th February 1908. By the 1930s he was working consistently as a screenwriter, most famously with Frank Launder on films such as The Lady Vanishes (1938) for Alfred Hitchcock and Night Train to Munich directed by Carol Reed. His first directorial job was also in partnership with Frank Launder when in 1943 they co-directed the home front drama Millions Like Us . After the war besides continuing to write singly and together Launder and Gilliat became producers in their own right, their first film being The Rake's Progress starring Rex Harrison, which Sidney Gilliat not only wrote but also directed. Subsequently Launder and Gilliat made over 40 films together, Launder preferring comedies as exemplified by the St Trinian's School films (which Gilliat did not much admire) while his partner preferred to concentrate on dramas and thrillers such as the much admired Green For Danger with Alistair Sim in 1946, London Belongs to Me in 1948 and State Secret in 1950. perhaps his most singular film as a director was Only Two Can Play, adapted from a Kingsley Amis novel and starring Peter Sellers. He was also a great lover of music and wrote two librettos for Malcolm Williamson operas, most notably Our Man in Havana which like the film was based on a work by Graham Greene. Gilliat also worked on the film. He married Beryl Brewer in the early 1930s and had two children, Caroline who was an opera singer and teacher and Joanna who is a journalist. He had three grandchildren and died at his home in Wiltshire in 1994.
