About the Book

Kurt Schwerdt diente während des Zweiten Weltkriegs als Offizier der Wehrmacht. Bereits wenige Wochen nach Beginn des Russlandfeldzuges verlor er seine rechte Hand, blieb er als aktiver Offizier im Dienst und wurde als Lehroffizier auf den Truppenübungsplatz Döberitz versetzt. Hier kam es im Mai 1943 zu einem Unglück, wodurch er seine verbliebene linke Hand verlor. Als im Herbst 1944 die Bildung des Volkssturmes verkündet wurde, meldete er sich freiwillig an die Front und wurde Adjutant in einem Grenadierregiment, mit welchem er an der Ardennenoffensive teilnahm und im April 1945 die Kapitulation im Ruhrkessel erlebte. Noch vor Kriegsende wurden ihm hohe Auszeichnungen verliehen. Nach dem Krieg arbeitete Kurt Schwerdt als Rechtsanwalt bis er 1954 die Amtsgeschäfte des Bürgermeisters von Biedenkopf übernahm. Als Bürgermeister lenkte er seinen Augenmerk auf die die Verschwisterung und Verbrüderung mit den ehemaligen Feinden jenseits der Grenzen, denn als Soldat hatte er erlebt, wohin falsche Ideale führen können. Fortan setzte er sich mit aller Kraft für ein vereintes Europa ein und vollzog die Wandlung vom patriotischem jungen Offizier zum bekennenden Europäer. Während seiner 18jährigen Amtszeit als Bürgermeister von Biedenkopf erfolgten Verschwisterungen mit europäischen Städten, darunter die Verschwisterung mit La Charite sur Loire in Frankreich. Für seine Bemühungen, ein gemeinsames Europa zu erschaffen, wurde ihm 1970 das Europakreuz des Verbandes der Europäischen Frontkämpfers, der "Confederation Europeene des Anciens Combatants" verliehen. Diese hohe und seltene Auszeichnung würdigen die Verdienste um Versöhnung und Freundschaft, mit dem Bestreben, ein geeintes Europa in Frieden und Freiheit zu schaffen. 1985 wurde die Stadt Biedenkopf für ihre hervorragenden Leistungen um die Verbreitung des europäischen Einigungsgedanken mit der Ehrenfahne des Europarates ausgezeichnet. Kurt Schwerdt verstarb im Mai 2007 in seiner Wahlheimat Biedenkopf.
