Williamsons geprägte Transaktionskostenökonomik hat sich bis heute zu den grundlegenden und einflussreichsten Forschungsansätzen der Ökonomik entwickelt. Ihr Ursprung geht in die 30er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts zurück, wobei als Ausgangspunkt in der Regel die grundlegende Erkenntnis von Coase gesehen wird, dass die Koordination ökonomischer Aktivitäten über Märkte nicht kostenlos vonstatten geht. Diese Kosten können so hoch sein, dass der Markt als Koordinationsmechanismus versagt und andere Formen der Abwicklung von Transaktionen gewählt werden. Coase begründet damit die Entstehung von Unternehmen, in denen eine entsprechende Transaktion zu geringeren Kosten als über Märkte erfolgen kann. Im Anschluss an die durch die Herangehensweise von Coase geprägten Arbeiten wurde die Transaktionskostenökonomik maßgeblich von Williamson weiterentwickelt und generalisiert. Somit wird nunmehr der Anspruch erhoben, nicht ausschließlich die Alternativen Markt und Unternehmen, sondern sämtliche Koordinations- bzw. Vertragsformen unter dem Aspekt der Transaktionskosten analysieren zu können. Die vorliegende Untersuchung verfolgt in diesem Kontext sowohl den Anspruch, die Transaktionskostenökonomik in ihren konzeptionellen Grundlagen fokussiert darzulegen als auch insbesondere eine dogmenhistorische Fundierung ihrer Entwicklung im Kontext maßgeblicher Ansätze des ökonomischen Denkens vorzunehmen. Da sich das Fundament der Transaktionskostenökonomik aus einer Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Arbeiten speist, diese Entwicklung und dogmenhistorische Fundierung in den gängigen Übersichtswerken der Transaktionskostenökonomik bzw. der Neuen Institutionenökonomik jedoch mitunter gänzlich fehlt oder lediglich kurz behandelt wird, gilt es diese Lücke zu schließen und Williamsons zentrale Arbeiten adäquat zu verorten.
