Extrait: I Je suis si petite qu'on pourrait me donner la qualification de naine, si ma tête, mes pieds et mes mains n'étaient pas parfaitement proportionnés à ma taille. Mon visage n'a ni la longueur démesurée, ni la largeur ridicule que l'on attribue aux nains et aux êtres difformes en général, et la finesse de mes extrémités serait enviée par plus d'une belle dame. Cependant, l'exiguïté de ma taille m'a fait verser des larmes en cachette. Je dis en cachette, car mon corps lilliputien renfermait une âme fière, orgueilleuse, incapable de donner le spectacle de ses faiblesses au premier venu..., et surtout à ma tante. Du moins, telle était ma façon de sentir à quinze ans. Mais les événements, les chagrins, les soucis, les joies, la pratique de la vie, en un mot, ont détendu rapidement des caractères beaucoup plus rigides que le mien. Ma tante était la femme la plus désagréable que j'aie jamais connue. Je la trouvais fort laide, autant que mon esprit, qui n'avait jamais rien vu ni rien comparé, pouvait en juger. Sa figure était anguleuse et commune, sa voix criarde, sa démarche lourde et sa stature ridiculement élevée. Près d'elle, j'avais l'air d'un puceron, d'une fourmi. Quand je lui parlais, je levais la tête aussi haut que si j'avais voulu examiner la cime d'un peuplier. Elle était d'origine plébéienne et, semblable à beaucoup de gens de sa race, prisait par-dessus tout la force physique et professait pour ma chétive personne un dédain qui m'écrasait. Son moral était la reproduction fidèle de son physique. Il ne renfermait que des âpretés, des aspérités, des angles aigus contre lesquels les infortunés, qui vivaient avec elle, se cassaient le nez quotidiennement. Mon oncle, gentilhomme campagnard dont la bêtise était devenue proverbiale dans le pays, l'avait épousée par faiblesse d'esprit et de caractère. Il mourut peu de temps après son mariage, et je ne l'ai jamais connu. Quand je pus réfléchir, j'attribuai cette mort prématurée à ma tante, qui me paraissait de force à conduire rapidement en terre non seulement un pauvre sire comme mon oncle, mais encore tout un régiment de maris.
