About the Author:

Glen O'Grady (glen_ogrady@rp.edu.sg) is the Director for the Centre for Educational Development at the Republic Polytechnic, Singapore. He also leads a Problem-based Learning Institute that facilities the development of Problem-based Learning throughout Asia. He has worked at Monash University, The University of Queensland, The National University of Singapore and Ngee Ann Polytechnic and has more than 20 years' experience in academic staff development in higher and further education. He has run academic development programmes in numerous countries and has published in the areas of Problem-based Learning, Student Assessment and Vocational and Technical Education. He is chair of the International Symposium on Problem-based Learning and is a member of the organising committee for the Pan-American PBL Association. He has been the editor of the International Newsletter PBL Reflections since 2003.

Elaine H. J. Yew (elaine_yew@rp.edu.sg) is the Assistant Director (Academic) of the Centre for Educational Development at Republic Polytechnic. She has more than 12 years' experience as an educator both as a secondary school teacher and polytechnic facilitator. She has been actively involved in the design and facilitation of PBL in disciplines including Chemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Science, Cognitive Processes and Problem-Solving. She obtained her doctoral degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Erasmus in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and the theme of her doctoral thesis was "How Students Learn in Problem-based Learning (PBL)". This was a process-oriented study that examined in detail how and what students learn in the RP-PBL process. She has published in the areas of the process of PBL, tutor behaviours in PBL and scaffolding in PBL. Her current research interests include effective facilitation in PBL and PBL in science education.

Karen P. L. Goh (karen_goh@rp.edu.sg) is the Assistant Director (Administration) of the Centre for Educational Development at Republic Polytechnic, overseeing the professional development needs and programmes for faculty staff and implementing PBL initiatives across the institution. She has more than fourteen years of experience in training and facilitating adult learners and students in Singapore. She began her professional career as a teacher, having taught in various educational contexts from tutoring adult learners to specialising in Gifted Education for high school students. She has designed and conducted workshops on problem-based learning, assessment, facilitation skills, adult learning, reflective thinking and student motivation for faculty staff, corporate clients and other educational institutions, as well as conducted talks for various organisations on problem-based learning and pedagogical reform. She has presented PBL papers at conferences in Singapore, Australia, the United States and Mexico. Her key research interests lie in effective facilitation, academic identity and epistemology. She holds a Master of Arts in Higher and Professional Education from the Institute of Education in London.

Henk G. Schmidt (schmidt@fsw.eur.nl) holds professorial positions at Erasmus University and Maastricht University, the Netherlands. Presently, he is the Rector Magnificus of Erasmus University. His research areas of interest are learning and memory, and he has published on problem-based learning, long-term memory, and the development of expertise in medicine. He received numerous awards for his work in medical education, among them an honorary degree of the Université de Sherbrooke in Canada and the Distinguished Career Award of the American Educational Research Association. In 2004, the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, announced him to be the first winner of its international medical education research prize.
