Seit Mitte der Neunzigerjahre hat sich der Onlinejournalismus ständig weiterentwickelt. 1994 wagten sich die ersten traditionellen Medien ins World Wide Web, darunter das Nachrichtenmagazin Der Spiegel. Es folgten Internetauftritte von Tageszeitungen, wie der taz, sowie von reinen Online-Zeitungen wie der Netzeitung. Lange ließen die Reaktionen der öffentlich-rechtlichen Fernsehsender auf diese neue Bewegung nicht auf sich warten. Die ARD beispielsweise bot ab 1. August 1996 ihre Nachrichtensendungen im Internet als Text und Video an. Im Jahr 2000 nutzen bereits 30 Prozent der deutschen Bevölkerung das Internet. Immer mehr Muttermedien, die ihren Ursprung im Print besitzen, verbesserten ihr Angebot technisch sowie inhaltlich. Doch der Internetboom wurde durch den so genannten Dotcom-Crash gestoppt. Dieser hatte auch Auswirkungen auf den Onlinejournalismus. Es kam zu einschneidenden Einsparungen und Entlassungen (http: //goa2003.onlinejournalismus.de/webwatch/10jahrechronik.php, Zugriff am 26.10.2007). Seitdem setzen etwa Printmedien eher auf ein ergänzendes Angebot ihres Muttermediums im Internet, das vorwiegend neue Zielgruppen ansprechen soll. Auf diese Weise wollen die Unternehmen auch die Leserbindung an das Printprodukt erhöhen (Mast, 2000, S. 520). Der direkte ökonomische Nutzen steht also nicht an erster Stelle, er kann eher auf lange Sicht erwartet werden.
