Neue Technologien wie das MP3 Audio-Format und ein weit reichendes Distributionsnetzwerk durch das Internet haben den Vertrieb von Musik als digitales Gut ermöglicht und somit Veränderungen in der traditionellen Wertschöpfungskette ausgelöst. Dem Jahreswirtschaftsbericht 2004 der International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI 2005) zufolge hat sich die Anzahl von legal herunter geladenen Titeln im Vergleich zu 2003 in den vier größten digitalen Musikmärkten (USA, GB, Frankreich, Deutschland) verzehnfacht. Chris Anderson, Chefredakteur des Magazins Wired, beschreibt in seinem Artikel der Oktoberausgabe 2004 "The Long Tail" wie sich durch die veränderten Bedingungen in der Online-Welt ein völlig neues ökonomisches Modell für die Medien- und Unterhaltungsindustrie entwickelt hat, dessen enormes Potenzial es erst zu beginnen zeigt. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es die Faktoren zu untersuchen, die einen solchen neuen Marktplatz ermöglicht haben und seine Auswirkungen auf alle Akteure in der Wertschöpfungskette zu analysieren. Hierzu werden zunächst in Kapitel 2 die strukturellen Veränderungen im digitalen Musikmarkt dargestellt. In Kapitel 3 folgt dann eine nähere Erläuterung des Begriffs "Long Tail" und seiner Bedeutung für den Musikmarkt. Kapitel 4 behandelt dann die Effekte auf gegenwärtige und zukünftige Geschäftsmodelle und der daraus resultierenden Herausforderungen und Chancen aller Interessensvertreter der Musikindustrie bei der Implementierung eines solchen "Long Tail"-Geschäfts. Der Beitrag schließt mit einer Zusammenfassung der wesentlichen Fakten.
