About the Book

Unter Operations Research versteht man die Anwendung von wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen auf das Problem der Entscheidungsfindung in der Unsicherheits- oder Risikosituation, mit dem Ziel, den Entscheidungsträgem bei der Suche nach optima- len Lösungen eine quantitative Basis zu liefern. Dabei können grundsätzliche Er- kenntnisse aus allen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen herangezogen werden. Diese Begriffsbestimmung von Operations Research (kurz OR) ist das Ergebnis ei- nes von der Operational Research Society ausgeschriebenen Wettbewerbs über eine Definition von OR. Die wesentlichen Begriffsmerkmale dieser Definition sind: (1) Mit OR sollen Entscheidungen mit wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen vorbereitet werden (Entscheidungsvorbereitung); (2) Es werden optimale Lösungen angestrebt. Üblicherweise geht es bei der Ent- scheidungsvorbereitung um die Untersuchung und den Vergleich von alternati- ven Entscheidungsmöglichkeiten. alternativen Strategien oder alternativen Sy- stementwürfen; (3) Die Entscheidungsvorbereitung soll eine quantitative Basis liefern. Dies setzt voraus, daß die Daten, die in ein OR-Modell eingehen, quantifizierbar und hin- reichend genau bestimmbar sind; (4) Es werden grundsätzlich Erkenntnisse aus allen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen herangezogen, soweit sie zum Verständnis des Problems und zu seiner Lösung beitragen können. OR ist insoweit interdisziplinär ("Teamwork"); (5) Der Entscheidungsträger befindet sich bei der Suche nach einer optimalen Lö- sung in einer Ungewißheits-oder Risikosituation, d. h. er hat nur mangelhafte Kenntnisse über die künftige Entwicklung (OR geht also nicht von der Prämisse der vollständigen Information aus). Dieser zweite Band der Darstellung des Operations Research berücksichtigt insbe- sondere die Tatsache, daß sich der Entscheidungsträger bei der Suche nach optima- len Lösungen in einer Risikosituation befindet.
