Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Unternehmen sind heute veränderten Umweltbedingungen ausgesetzt, die es zu bewältigen gilt. So hat sich eine Wandel vom Anbieter- zum Kundenmarkt vollzogen, der sich in zunehmender Heterogenität der Kundenwünsche ausdrückt. Der Kunde nutzt den starken Konkurrenzdruck zwischen den Firmen zu seinem Vorteil, um gesteigerte Qualität zu gleichen Preisen zu fordern. Zunehmende Internationalisierung des Wettbewerbs und Globalisierung erhöhen den Preisdruck zusätzlich, da der Einkauf von Produkten weltweit getätigt werden kann. Kunden sind heute aufgrund der gesteigerten Nutzung des Internets besser über verschiedene Anbieter informiert und haben die Möglichkeit ohne großen Aufwand international Einkäufe zu tätigen. Ein weiterer Faktor ist der rasante technische Fortschritt, dem standgehalten werden muss und der hohe Anforderungen an eine zukunftsorientierte Strategieausrichtung stellt. Diese Ausgangssituation führt vor allem im Bereich der Einzel- und Kleinserienfertigung dazu, dass Unternehmen immer mehr in Nischenmärkten mit kundenindividueller Einzelfertigung aktiv sind. Allgemein wird versucht durch die Generierung immer neuer Produktvarianten Kunden zu halten und auch neue Kunden zu gewinnen. So steigt die interne Komplexität im Unternehmen immer weiter an und lässt Kontroll- und Koordinationskosten/-aufwände stetig anwachsen. Diese Problematik und daraus resultierende Anforderungen an Produkte werden in Kapitel 2 eingehender dargestellt und besprochen. Um diese Ausgangssituation zu bewältigen und die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit des Unternehmens zu sichern, bedarf es eines gezielten Managements der Variantenvielfalt, das grundsätzlich auf den Prinzipien der Komplexitätsvermeidung, -beherrschung und -reduktion basiert. Hierzu ist eine Optimierung der Produktgestaltung/-entwicklung und Effizienzsteigerung im gesamten Unternehmen mittels geeigneter Produktarchitekturen anzustreben.
