Studien zur Rezeption der Antike boomen, und der vorliegende Band spiegelt diesen Prozess wider. Er versammelt dreizehn Beitrage mit einem Schwerpunkt auf dem spaten 19. Jahrhundert und der ersten Halfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Im 19. Jahrhundert loste die (Wieder-)Entdeckung assyrischer Stadte wie Ninive durch die Archaologie groaes Interesse bei Europaern aus, die diese Stadte zuvor nur aus biblischen Texten kannten. Die neuen Erkenntnisse stellten fruhere Diskurse uber die Region, die damals in Europa kursierten, in Frage. Allerdings gelangten die antiken Objekte zumeist nicht unmittelbar als Primarquellen in das allgemeine Bewusstsein; vielmehr konnte ihre Rezeption je nach aktuell vorherrschendem Diskurs erweitert oder modifiziert werden. Dies bedeutet, dass ein Thema nahezu beliebig (re)modifiziert und fur verschiedene Kontexte interpretiert werden kann. Die Frage, die fur diejenigen, die sich mit Rezeptionsstudien befassen, von Interesse ist, besteht daher nicht darin, zu beurteilen, ob die Vergangenheit "richtig" dargestellt wird (ein normativer Ansatz), sondern vielmehr darin, die Situation zu verstehen, in der sie rezipiert und letztendlich instrumentalisiert wird (ein konstruktivistischer Ansatz). Ansatz). Aus diesem Grund liegt der Fokus mehrerer Beitrage auf dem diskursiven Wechselspiel zwischen der (Wieder-)Entdeckung selbst und ihrer Verarbeitung in Politik, Architektur und Kunst. Auch wenn die archaologischen Ausgrabungen und die Entstehung der Assyriologie als neue akademische Disziplin eindeutig ein Katalysator fur diese Rezeption waren, muss man auch andere Chronologien berucksichtigen, die bisher als eher peripher betrachtet wurden. Daher enthalt der Band auch Studien, die sich mit Quellen ab dem 17. Jahrhundert befassen. - Die Beitrage beschaftigen sich unter anderem mit dem Vorderen Orient in deutschen Schulbuchern um 1900 (B. Onken), Rekonstruktionszeichnungen altorientalischer Architektur als Inspiration fur das Bauen in den 1920er Jahren in Deutschland (B. Pedde), dem Romanschriftsteller Karl May als Wissensmultiplikator uber den Alten Nahen Osten (F. Pedde), Einfluss des Alten Orient auf europaische Mode (F. Pinnock) und Arnaldo Momiglianos Bild vom Orient (A. Marcone), um nur einige aufzulisten.
