Dabei spricht sowohl die theoretische Grundlage der Gesichtserkennung als auch bisherige Forschungsergebnisse zum ORE für eine eklatante Rolle semantischer bzw. konzeptueller Informationen. Die vorliegende Arbeit soll die Erforschung des konzeptuellen Ansatzes weiterführen und einen Beitrag zu diesem Forschungsfeld leisten, indem der Fragestellung nachgegangen wird, ob der ORE durch eine konzeptuelle Intervention maßgeblich beeinflusst oder gar beseitigt werden kann. Es wird zunächst die theoretische Grundlage der Thematik aufgeführt und anschließend werden Hypothesen aus der Fragestellung abgeleitet. Hiernach wird das methodische Vorgehen dieser Untersuchung erläutert und berichtet, welche Ergebnisse die Studie hervorgebracht hat und was sich daraus für die Thematik und für zukünftige Forschung ableiten lässt. Jüngste Untersuchungen zum Other-'Race'-Effekt (Gesichter der eigenen Ethnie werden besser wiedererkannt als Gesichter anderer Ethnien) zeigen, dass die Rolle konzeptueller Informationen intensiver erforscht werden sollte, da sie einen mindestens genauso wichtigen Einfluss auf den ORE zu haben scheinen, wie die gut erforschte visuelle Expertise. In dieser Untersuchung (N = 281) wurden weiße Testpersonen auf ihre Wiedererkennungsleistung (Sensitivität d') für weiße und MENAT-Gesichter getestet. Dabei bekam ein Teil der Stichprobe (n = 131) eine konzeptuelle Instruktion ("Wem sieht diese Person ähnlich?") in der Lernphase. Verglichen wurde diese Stichprobe mit einer Kontrollgruppe (n = 150).
