Cette etude, qui s'inscrit dans une reflexion generale sur la forme epistolaire et sur l'ecriture du moi a Rome, met en rapport le recueil de jeunesse des Heroides, avec les deux recueils de lettres de la maturite et de l'exil, les Tristes et les Pontiques, pour mesurer l'evolution de l'art epistolaire d'Ovide et cerner l'interet de la forme de l'epitre en vers dans son oeuvre. Apres avoir souligne l'ambiguite generique de ces trois oeuvres litteraires, l'auteur degage les traits constants d'un art epistolaire propre a Ovide, en montrant notamment la presence continue d'une meme rhetorique, d'un meme univers poetique et d'une meme forme de distance humoristique. Toutefois, si la nature des procedes epistolaires varie peu, l'ouvrage montre que la fonction assignee par Ovide a la forme epistolaire evolue, elle, considerablement. Ovide a d'abord explore, dans sa jeunesse, de facon ludique, une forme litteraire qui lui permettait de montrer ses talents de poete et de reflechir, parallelement, a son art. Puis, face a l'experience de la solitude et de la relegation, en reutilisant une forme qu'il maitrisait parfaitement et qui etait caracteristique de son genie, il en a mesure les enjeux. Il fallait depasser le paradoxe des Heroides et la maladresse des epistolieres, pour parvenir, grace a une maitrise parfaite de la forme epistolaire, a exprimer l'intime et la verite d'une experience inedite. Il fallait se faire ' grand poete ', nouvel Acontius, non pas pour tromper, mais pour parvenir a communiquer, malgre les difficultes, avec les Romains et ainsi a rester vivant. Le projet etait ambitieux, mais il semble qu'Ovide ait reussi, grace a la transformation poetique d' une forme traditionnelle, a conferer a l'ecriture
