Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Landschaftsarchitektur, Landespflege, Gartenbau, Note: 1,0, Universität für Bodenkultur Wien (Institut für Landschaftsentwicklung, Erholungs- und Naturschutzplanung), Veranstaltung: Bakkalaureatsseminar, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Im Osten Österreichs bildeten ausgedehnte Trockenrasen bis ins 19. Jahrhundert hinein vielerorts eine weite, offene Steppenlandschaft, in der zahllose Viehherden weideten. Weite und Offenheit prägen auch in der heutigen Zeit die Identität dieser pannonischen Landschaft, doch sind von den Trockenrasen, die einst ein bedeutendes Landschaftselement waren, nur mehr verschwindend kleine Reste erhalten. Der größte Teil dieser Steppen wurde in intensiv genutztes Ackerland umgewandelt, andere Teile wurden aufgeforstet oder bebaut. Die Reste, die noch erhalten sind, bleiben auch weiterhin vielfältigen Bedrohungen ausgesetzt1. Neben den schon genannten Punkten ist es vor allem die Aufgabe der Nutzung durch Beweidung oder Mahd die viele Trockenrasen in ihrer langfristigen Existenz gefährdet2. Ein großer Anteil der Trockenrasen, die für den Steppencharakter der Landschaft verantwortlich waren, ist nämlich erst durch den Menschen geschaffen worden. In den inter- und postglazialen Wärmeperioden wechselte die Ausbreitung von Wald und Steppe. An extrem trocken-heißen Standorten blieb die aus dem Südosten eingewanderte Steppenvegetation auch in Perioden, die von Wäldern dominiert waren, erhalten. Schon ab der Jungsteinzeit begann der Mensch immer mehr, die vorhandenen lichten Wälder zurückzudrängen und die weidenden Haustiere schufen große, dauerhaft gehölzfreie Flächen, auf die sich in weiterer Folge die Steppenvegetation ausbreitete3. Im weiteren Verlauf der Geschichte gab es Zeiten, in denen die Steppe durch die Ausbreitung von Äckern und Wäldern wieder auf extreme Standorte zurückgedrängt wurde, um sich später von dort wieder großflächig auszudehnen, wie etwa zu ihrer Blütezeit im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert
