Seguramente é incompreensível o mundo retratado em "Papo Cabeça", em qualquer uma das quatro partes que o compõem. E essa impossibilidade de compreensão se dá de tal modo que as coisas se desagregam, tais como os órgãos e membros dos dois primeiros contos do livro, independentes e poderiam ou não poderiam pertencer ao mesmo indivíduo. O mundo ordenado o é apenas aparentemente: assume seu comando Dr. Gualtemo, com seu linguajar pernóstico, sua fidelidade às regras e aos manuais, tratando seus funcionários com a mais límpida burocracia e fazendo dela um modo de vida. Em outros momentos, é Dr. Sepúlveda o representante do mundo oficial, propiciando a "Comemoração da puberdade de Marisa", exposta na escola diante da criançada que brinca a seu redor, enquanto que sua privacidade é preservada dentro de uma caixa de papelão. Esse e os demais contos são reveladores de que, para o homem sensível, resta apenas a aparência das coisas, e ainda assim, contraditória e incompleta.As duas partes finais do livro, "Experimentos" e "Paródias", não se afastam muito do universo retratado nas primeiras. O título "Experimentos" diz respeito a contos inovadores ("Cotação", "Thomas Mann revisitado"), presentes ao lado de outros de estrutura mais convencional ("Faca de dois gomos", "Febre Amarela"), que também são experiências. Em "Paródias", às vezes ocorrem paráfrases de obras conhecidas; metade de "Alhures, amiúde" recria a cena inicial de O Processo de Kafka, ao lado de alusões a Drummond, João Cabral e Manuel Bandeira, cujo sobrenome Carneiro, explica parcialmente o final do conto. Nas demais paródias, frases inteiras, às vezes, resultam de intertextualidade, às vezes ocorrem paródias parciais, como é o caso de "De gallina", herdeira de "A galinha" de Clarice Lispector. É muito provável que a fragmentação e o insólito desses trinta contos correspondam a uma imagem mais fiel que o homem atual tem de um mundo que se apresenta absurdo e incompreensível. É uma imagem incompleta, retalhada, retomada em cada narrativa, a revelar de forma provisória a realidade igualmente retalhada, distribuída, por exemplo, no visor de cristal líquido que pulula na modernidade.
