Diese Kiste, die einst ein Schiff über das große Meer nach Mexiko gebracht, und deren Inhalt frohen Wahn spendender Schaum gewesen, war zur Wohnstätte eines Atoms des großen menschlichen Elends geworden; in ihr verbrachte Paquito seine Tage. Ein verkrüppeltes Kind war Paquito. Eine Zusammensetzung von lauter zu viel und zu wenig; ein völlig mißlungenes Stück des Menschen formenden Töpfers. Zwischen den Schultern saß ihm ein Höcker und seine Brust sprang spitz vor, von den Hüften an aber war überhaupt wenig mehr von Paquito vorhanden - ein Fetzen Decke verhüllte diesen Teil des mißratenen Werkes. Das einzig Schöne an dem ganzen Mißgebilde waren seine Augen. Schwarz und unendlich tief, blickten sie träumerisch, als schauten sie zurück in weite Fernen uralten Unrechts; fragend war oft ihr Ausdruck, als sähen sie ein Rätsel und flehten um eine Antwort, die Befreiung brächte. Das Rätsel, das die Kinderaugen gewahrten, hieß Woher, wohin, wozu? Und hätte es unter den Menschen, die mit Paquito einen der armseligen Höfe der Stadt bewohnten, solche gegeben, denen die äußeren Erscheinungen Anlaß zur Grübelei über Ursache und Endzweck bieten, so wäre des Kindes Anblick so recht dazu angetan gewesen, diese Fragen in ihnen hervorzurufen. Aber Don Eusebio und Donna Guadalupe, Paquitos Onkel und Tante, waren träg veranlagte Menschen, die überhaupt wenig dachten und nie den Wunsch empfunden hatten, dem Rätsel näher zu kommen, das hinter jeder Existenz liegt.
