Parasema - griechische Staatssymbole - begegneten den Menschen tagtaglich in griechischen Poleis: Die meist kleinformatigen Symbole waren auf Objekten des alltaglichen Lebens angebracht, wie auf Marktgewichten, Munzen oder Losplaketten, aber auch auf stadtischen Siegeln oder auf Urkundenstelen. Diesen Gattungen ist gemein, dass sie offiziellen Charakter besassen, da sie von staatlichen Funktionstragern hergestellt bzw. verwendet wurden. Das Phanomen dieser Parasema ist bislang nur unzureichend erforscht: Es fehlt ein Uberblick uber das archaologische Material sowie seine Auswertung unter Berucksichtigung der literarischen und epigraphischen Quellen. Diese Forschungslucke schliesst die vorliegende Studie, indem sie Parasema auf Grundlage einer vollstandigen Materialsammlung aller Gattungen untersucht. Dabei wird gezeigt, dass es sich bei Parasema um ein originar griechisches Phanomen handelt, das in insgesamt 14 verschiedenen Denkmalergattungen fur den Zeitraum vom 6. bis zum 1. Jh. v. Chr. nachgewiesen werden kann. Nicht nur diese lange und vielfaltige Verwendung, sondern auch die weite geographische Verbreitung - Parasema sind in 96 Poleis und 8 Bundesstaaten in Griechenland, Kleinasien und an der Schwarzmeerkuste belegt - zeugen von der allgemeinen Verstandlichkeit der Symbole und von ihrer Bedeutung fur die Burgergemeinschaften. In der ikonographischen Untersuchung werden vor allem die Parasema der Poleis Athen, Priene und Magnesia am Maeander in Fallstudien in den Mittelpunkt geruckt. Neben den staatsrechtlichen Funktionen - Garantie, Kontrolle, Herkunftsangabe - waren Parasema aufgrund ihrer stets positiv besetzten Motive bestens dafur geeignet, die Gemeinwesen in optimaler, knapper Form zu reprasentieren. Die Studie umfasst zudem einen umfangreichen geographisch gegliederten Katalog, mehrere Appendices sowie 36 Tafeln.
About the Author: Simone Killen (b. 1977) studied Classical Archaeology, Ancient History and Latin Philology in Munster and Munich. In 2012 she earned her doctorate at the University of Munster with a dissertation on "Parasema. Official symbols of Greek poleis and states". For 2016/2017 she received the Wulfing fellowship awarded by the German Archaeological Institute. Her research interests are ancient state symbols, Asia Minor, numismatics, weights, measures as well as wool and textile production in the ancient world.
