About the Book

Part Nigh...But Not Plumb! is an often-humorous reflection by author Tom Northam on his ups and downs, successes and failures, joys and triumphs. It chronicles his struggles with morality, dealing with his losses, and the realization that it is during the journey that one truly obtains success. He describes his early days in small-town Zionsville, Indiana and discovering the world of make-believe, imagination and creativity while living in a somewhat restrictive religious culture with a perfectionist and critical musical mother and a traveling salesman father who was a star athlete but often absent. He overcomes stage fright, seeks attention, and expands his musical abilities. Food rationing during WWII taught him to be self-sufficient; the Boy Scouts taught him a code of morals and ethics. He discovers the cultural shock and trauma of relocating from a town with a population of 1,300 to an area of more than 13,000,000 people known as Los Angeles. He adjusts to high school, attends college, and enters the labor market. He also discovers new talents, new friendships and romance...and the cruelty of others. Facing the military draft and discipline of the army's basic training, he learns how to become a leader and gains self-confidence. While stationed in Germany, he develops friendships with former enemies and learns the value of cultural differences and traveling to places that before had only been imaginary. He discovers the act of balancing his work world with show business. In them, he finds often-opposing personalities and the hurtfulness and shallowness. At last, he discovers a new talent, a new identity, and a new being. He addresses the complexities of writing and producing musical comedies and senior theatre. He takes us behind the curtain into some of his productions including A Bag Full of Miracles and Sometimes A Rainbow. He talks about his success not only in the theatrical world, but in life as a whole. He discovers who he is, what he is, and gains the confidence to express himself, his faith, and his love to others. He jokes about missing the mark, that he is part nigh...but not plumb!
