Die vorliegende Monographie befaßt sich mit dem Werk von Louis Wirth (1897-1952), einem Mitglied der Chicagoer Schule der Soziologie. Wirth ist im Gedächtnis des Faches nur sehr knapp, nämlich über seinen klassisch gewordenen Aufsatz "Urbanism as a Way of Life" von 1938 und damit vor allem als Stadtsoziologe präsent. Inhaltlich geht es in seinem Werk aber vielmehr um die theoretische Konzeption einer Soziologie der Modeme, die nach Möglichkeiten und Formen sozialer Partizipation und gesellschaftlicher Integration unter den Bedingungen dauerhaft heterogener, urbaner Lebens- weisen in modemen Gesellschaften fragt. So ist zunächst festzustellen, daß es Wirth mit seinen zahlreichen Beiträgen zu Chicago, der Stadt, in der er Jahrzehnte lebte und arbeitete, nicht um die Stadt an und für sich geht, daß er als Stadtsoziologe also stark unterschätzt ist. Die Stadt war für Wirth das Forschungslabor der Moderne. Chicago stand dabei exemplarisch für die Städte und die Städte für die Moderne. Eine theoriegeleitete empirische Forschung - wie sie für Wirth und die Chicagoer Schule kennzeichnend is- mußte, wenn über die moderne Gesellschaft nicht nur spekuliert werden sollte, einen Ort ausfindig machen, an dem man moderner Gesellschaft hab- haft werden konnte. In Chicago untersuchte Wirth die gesellschaftlichen Strukturen, die aus Prozessen der Rationalisierung und Ausdifferenzierung entstanden sind und durch die Heterogenität der Lebensweisen und deren reflexive Aneignung gekennzeichnet werden können. In seiner Arbeit hat sich Wirth jedoch nicht mit dem akademischen Wissen zufrieden gegeben.
