Das erste Online-Dating-Portal wurde im Jahr 1956 in New York gegründet. Nach dessen Publizierung und Eröffnung expandierte und explodierte das Online-Dating-Konzept weltweit und ermöglichte dadurch die weltweite Suche nach einem geeigneten Partner über das Internet. Seitdem wurden in unterschiedlichen Ländern neue Portale gegründet und für viele Personen zugänglich gemacht. Das Geschäft mit dem Online-Dating hat sich so seit Jahren zu einem exponentiellen Markt entwickelt. Um dies zu belegen, kann eine Online Marktuntersuchung von aktiven Nutzern auf Online-Dating-Portalen und deren Vergleich untereinander herangezogen werden, aus der hervorgeht, dass im Jahr 2017 rund 8,6 Millionen Single-Frauen und Single-Männer auf der Suche nach der großen Liebe waren. Um virtuell mit anderen Single-Frauen oder Single-Männern möglichst schnell in den Austausch zu kommen, benutzen diese Singles Online-Dating-Portale, wie zum Beispiel Parship, C-Date, Friendscout24, Lovoo oder Tinder. Aufgrund der hier beschriebenen Vielfalt an Online-Dating-Portalen, die in dieser Bachelorarbeit nur in Deutschland betrachtet wird, gewinnen alle Plattformen immer mehr an Interessenten und gewinnen dadurch wiederum an Popularität. Diese wird umso mehr bei der Betrachtung der jährlichen Durchschnittszahlen an Registrierungen und Aufrufen auf Online-Dating-Plattformen deutlich.
