Sommeren 1885 var meget anspændt i Danmark. Landet havde en højreregering udnævnt af kongen. Denne regering kunne ikke få godkendt sine lovforslag af Folketinget, der var domineret af Venstre, som repræsenterede bønderne. Derfor sendte regeringen Folketinget hjem og udstedte lovene med kongens underskrift, men altså mod Folketingets vilje. Det var Venstre selvfølgelig rasende over. Folketingets formand Chresten Berg rejste rundt i landet med de andre venstreledere og holdt store protestmøder, med masser af deltagere. Et af disse møder blev holdt i Holstebro. Her havde indenrigsministeren givet en hemmelig ordre til politiet om at overvåge mødet fra talerstolen, da man vidste, at Berg ikke ville tale, hvis han havde politiet i ryggen. Som ventet nægtede Berg at tale, da politimesteren satte sig på tribunen. Det endte så med, at mødets dirigent gårdejer Peder Noes, sammen med redaktør Thomas Nielsen, bad politimesteren om at forlade tribunen, og da han nægtede, tog de ham forsigtigt under armene og førte ham ned. Et par dage efter blev de begge arresterede og ført til København, hvor de sad isolerede i varetægts-arrest i mere end 3 måneder. Da dommen faldt, blev de idømt yderligere 6 måneders fængsel på almindelig fangekost. Under fængselsopholdet og bagefter fik de sympatitilkendegivelser fra hele landet. Mange år senere blev de begge riddere af Dannebrog. Denne bog forsøger at beskrive Peder Noes liv og baggrund ved hjælp af hans selvbiografier og de breve, han og konen udvekslede under fængselsopholdet. Her får man indblik i Holstebrosagen og hvordan en stor gård i Vejrum i Nordvestjylland blev drevet.
