Cet ouvrage rassemble pour la premiere fois les differentes images du monde tel que le concevaient les anciens Egyptiens. Pour la plupart reproduites par un dessin, elles sont decrites et etudiees avec attention, venant ainsi completer les connaissances textuelles dont nous disposons sur le sujet. L'iconographie de chaque element constitutif du cosmos est abordee, celle du ciel, de l'element ou des elements le soutenant ainsi que celle la terre. Il en est de meme non seulement du Noun, qui equivaut a ce que le monde cree n'est pas, mais egalement des frontieres qui separent les deux univers et, de fait, qui les definissent. L'auteur s'attache aussi a comprendre l'origine de ces representations et a analyser leur evolution dans le temps, et precise leur nature ainsi que leur fonction, laquelle temoigne de la volonte de la part des anciens Egyptiens de maintenir le cosmos en equilibre. L'objectif de cet ouvrage est pluriel: donner au lecteur une vision d'ensemble des representations cosmologiques de l'ancienne Egypte, l'introduire a la lecture des images, discipline qui n'en est encore qu'a ces premices, et l'amener a reflechir a la facon dont l'etre humain pense et represente le monde dans lequel il vit. Tout au long de leur histoire, les anciens Egyptiens ont elabore une conception du monde d'une grande richesse. Cette pensee temoigne non seulement d'une observation attentive de leur environnement, mais aussi d'une profonde comprehension des lois inherentes aux grands cycles naturels. Leur perception premiere - celle du Nil, de la Vallee, du desert, du voyage du soleil ou de la nuit - s'est muee en une reflexion cosmologique intense basee sur la notion d'equilibre. C'est ainsi que le concept de Maat, personnifie par une deesse, se trouve au centre des croyances religieuses et de la vision du monde des anciens Egyptiens. Le monde est pense et represente comme etant en equilibre, un equilibre fragile et ephemere constamment menace par les forces entropiques, un equilibre qu'il convient sans cesse de reaffirmer. Si les dieux participent de cet effort, les hommes ne sont pas en reste, tout autant responsables, ils se doivent d'etre actifs. Ce double effort, a la fois divin et humain, s'apparente a une tension necessairement constante et inscrite dans la duree, condition sine qua non pour que le cosmos demeure viable.
