Entre 1867 et 2000, le gouvernement canadien a plac? plus de 150 000 enfants autochtones dans des pensionnats d?un bout ? l?autre du pays. Les autorit's gouvernementales et les missionnaires ?taient d?avis qu?afin de ? civiliser et de christianiser ? les enfants autochtones, il fallait les ?loigner de leurs parents et de leur communaut? d?origine respective. La vie de ces enfants au pensionnat ?tait empreinte de solitude et d?exclusion. La discipline y ?tait stricte et le d?roulement du quotidien, lui, fortement r?gent?. Les langues et les cultures autochtones ?taient d?nigr?es et r?prim?es. L ducation et la formation technique prenaient trop souvent la forme de corv?es et de t?ches m?nag?res assurant l?autonomie des pensionnats. La n?gligence ? l gard des enfants fut institutionnalis?e et le manque de supervision donna lieu ? des situations o? les ?l?ves furent victimes de s?vices physiques et sexuels. Une poursuite judiciaire d?pos?e par les anciens pensionnaires a men?, en 2008, ? la mise sur pied de la Commission de v?rit? et r?conciliation du Canada. ?tant l?aboutissement de plus de six ans de recherche, le rapport final de la Commission pr?sente l?histoire des pensionnats ainsi que leur h?ritage, et trace la voie de la r?conciliation. Pensionnats du Canada: La r?conciliation documente la complexit? de la r?conciliation en pr?sentant les constatations tir?es des t?moignages des survivants des pensionnats et d?autres participants aux activit's et aux audiences de la Commission. Pour de nombreux Autochtones, la r?conciliation passe par l?apaisement des familles et des collectivit?s, et par la revitalisation des cultures, des langues, de la spiritualit?, des lois et des syst?mes de gouvernance. Pour les gouvernements, l?institution d?une relation respectueuse suppose le d?mant?lement d?une culture politique et bureaucratique s?culaire s?appuyant, trop souvent, sur des notions d?assimilation d?pass?es. Quant aux ?glises, un engagement ? long terme envers la r?conciliation passe par la r?paration des actes d?vastateurs commis dans les pensionnats, le respect de la spiritualit? des Autochtones et le soutien ? leur lutte pour obtenir justice et ?quit?. Les ?coles doivent enseigner l?histoire canadienne en favorisant le respect mutuel, l?empathie et le dialogue. Les jeunes doivent savoir ce qui s?est pass? dans les pensionnats et conna?tre la riche histoire et les connaissances collectives des peuples autochtones. Ce volume fait aussi ressortir le r?le de la m?moire, de la soci?t? canadienne, du secteur priv? et des organismes ? but non lucratif certes, mais aussi des m?dias et de la communaut? sportive, dans le processus de r?conciliation. La Commission presse le Canada d?adopter la D?claration des Nations Unies sur les droits des peuples autochtones en vue de mener ? bien la r?conciliation. Victimes de violence et de discrimination, les peuples autochtones ont pourtant des droits conf?r's ? chacun en plus des droits issus de trait?s, et ces derniers ont un r?le crucial ? jouer dans la r?conciliation. Tous les Canadiens doivent comprendre en quoi les approches traditionnelles de la r?solution de conflits, la r?paration des pr?judices et la restauration des relations des Premi?res Nations, des Inuits et des M?tis peuvent orienter le processus. Les appels ? l?action de la Commission ?tablissent des mesures concr?tes ? prendre pour que nos descendants puissent vivre ensemble dans la dignit?, la paix et la prosp?rit?, sur ces terres d?sormais communes.
