Jahrhundert v. Chr. In der allgemeinen Auffassung gilt das "perikleische Zeitalter" als Inbegriff der aufglänzenden klassisch-griechischen Kultur. Doch die spärlichen historischen Quellen und Zeitzeugen deuten ebenso darauf hin, Perikles hätte in seiner Zeit als Stratege eine Tyrannis etabliert und ähnlich einem Monarchen regiert. Die folgende Ausarbeitung setzt sich mit der Frage auseinander, ob der Vergleich des Perikles mit einem "Tyrannos" berechtigt sein könnte. Um das Jahr 430 v.Chr. glich das Bild eines Tyrannen dem Gegenteil eines demokratischen Herrschers. Eine Tyrannis "gewährt [...] weder Gleichheit und polit. Mitwirkung noch legt sie Rechenschaft ab. Der [Tyrann] ist gewalttätig, zugänglich für Schmeichler, ruhmsüchtig, habgierig und überheblich." War die Person des Perikles mit seinen politischen Handlungen mit solch einer Begrifflichkeit gleichzusetzen oder glich seine Charakteristik doch eher einem demokratischen Staatsmann? Was hat es damit auf sich, dass der berühmt berüchtigte Perikles, der sonst als Schaffer der Demokratie, als Friedenspolitiker bezeichnet wird, doch so oft von HistorikerInnen und Zeitgenossen als Tyrann in einen Zusammenhang gebracht wird? Zur Begründung der Auswahl der Fragestellung ist zu betonen, dass die Begrifflichkeiten "Tyrann" und "Demokratie" in der Zeit der alten Geschichte auflebten und auch heute von großer Aktualität sind. Das Thema erscheint in der Geschichtsforschung als zeitlos und ist von der Vergangenheit bis in die Gegenwart von wichtiger Bedeutung.
