About the Book

Perils of a Polynesian Percussionist is set in the 1970's. Todd Barlow is reeling from the sudden, unexpected death of her beloved mare, Sesame. She decides it's time to rethink staying on her father's ranch after college to raise and train horses. She looks for-and finds-an escape by using her second talent, playing drums, to join the traveling Polynesian revue run by singer Sammy Kolomona. In a world opposite from everything she's ever known, Todd discovers the ups and downs of life on the road with a band. The friends she makes-other musicians and "groupies"-help her understand her own strengths and challenges, and lead her to an acceptance of herself she may never have gained on her family's ranch. Join Todd's wacky adventures with some very imaginative characters as she travels the Continental United States to clubs, show rooms, and casinos from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Lodi, California to Elko, Nevada and everywhere in between, proving that `ohana-"family" in Hawaiian-can consist of folks other than blood relatives. The author herself traveled with a Polynesian revue in the 1970's, but the characters in the book are fictitious, and the book's events are the product of the author's imagination. In Perils, as in her memoir, Corrigan champions her characters to survive and thrive under extreme conditions.
About the Author: Meg Blaine Corrigan is a Christian author, speaker and trainer who tells stories of wisdom, strength, fear, joy and risk-taking. Although she spent most of her adult life working as a counselor and social worker, Corrigan took a three-year hiatus from her career to play drums with a traveling Polynesian show group. Throughout most of her professional career, Corrigan continued to work in the music business part-time. Her first book, Then I Am Strong: Moving From My Mother's Daughter to God's Child, is a memoir relating Corrigan's upbringing in an alcoholic home, and later of her soul-chilling experience being brutally attacked and nearly left for dead. In Perils, as in her memoir, Corrigan champions her characters to survive and thrive under extreme conditions. Perils of a Polynesian Percussionist is her first novel. Corrigan's memoir, Then I Am Strong: Moving From My Mother's Daughter to God's Child, tells of her chaotic childhood with an alcoholic mother and co-dependent father. As a young adult, she was sexually assaulted at gunpoint, and then re-victimized by the unprofessional treatment she received from the law enforcement and medical communities. Megs' book and her compelling talks give readers and listeners a view of her faith walk, which led her towards wholeness and balance following her traumatic experiences. In telling her own story, Meg especially stresses the need for trauma victims to be strong advocates for themselves as well as other victims when faced with hurtful situations. Meg also discusses the importance of drinking responsibly, as well as the dangers associated with binge drinking. She reviews mental health services available to her listeners, and how these types of services helped her in her darkest hour.
