English summary: The "Persian reader" documents the development of the Modern Persian written language, based on a representative selection of original texts ranging from poetry and the literary prose of Ferdawsi (10/11th century) to modern literature, in its entire historical and geographical extension. A comprehensive glossary comprises the vocabulary, a concise grammar explains the historical and dialectal particularities; all with detailed bibliographical notes. Jahrhundert) bis hin zu moderner Literatur. Jedem Text ist ein Autorenportrait beigegeben, zahlreiche Fussnoten erlautern sprachliche Besonderheiten. Ein Gesamtglossar erfasst den Wortschatz, eine Kurzgrammatik die historischen und dialektalen Besonderheiten, alles mit reichen bibliographischen Hinweisen. Zielgruppe sind Wissenschaftler und fortgeschrittene Studierende.
About the Author: Contributor Biography - German Dr. Mehr Ali Newid studierte an der Aristoteles-Universitat / Thessaloniki Archaologie, Philologie, Byzantinistik und Kunstgeschichte. Nach dem Magister setzte er in Munchen sein Studium an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat / Munchen in den Fachern Indologie und Iranistik fort. Er lernte Alt- und Neugriechisch, Sanskrit, Pali und Prakrit, ferner Klassisch-Arabisch, Altpersisch, Avestisch und Pahlavi. Neben den drei Varianten des Neupersischen, Farsi, Dari und Tadschiki, beschaftigte er sich eingehend mit den Dialekten Mazandarani, Khorasani, Kermani, Sistani (Zaboli), Herati, Hazaragi und Kaboli. Er beherrscht Pashto und Beloutschi. Nach seiner Promotion lehrte und forschte er viele Jahre am Institut fur Indologie und Iranistik in Munchen und war Mitarbeiter an den Staatlichen Antikensammlungen und dem Staatlichen Museum fur Volkerkunde, wo er mehrere Ausstellungen, darunter auch "Kunst des Buddhismus entlang der Seidenstrasse" vorbereitete. Im Mittelpunkt seiner Tatigkeit am Institut fur Geschichte und Kultur des Nahen Orients sowie Turkologie stehen die neuiranische Philologie sowie islamische Geschichte und Kultur. Zahlreiche Forschungsreisen fuhrten ihn in den Iran, nach Usbekistan, Turkmenistan, Syrien, Griechenland und in die Turkei. Er veroffentlichte mehrere Schriften, insbesondere zur Kultur und Geschichte Persiens und Afghanistans. Zuletzt ist von ihm erschienen: "Der schiitische Islam in Bildern - Rituale und Heilige," Munchen 2006. Ein Worterbuch Pashto-Deutsch ist in Vorbereitung.PD Dr. Peter-Arnold Mumm ist seit 1989 am Institut fur Vergleichende und Indogermanische Sprachwissenschaft sowie Albanologie an der Universitat Munchen tatig. Als Indogermanist beschaftigt er sich mit den Sprach(grupp)en Indoiranisch, Altgriechisch, Armenisch, Latein, Litauisch, Altgermanisch, Altkirchenslavisch, Tocharisch u.a., als Typologe auch mit nichtindogermanischen Sprachen. Er koordiniert das Zentrum historische Sprachwissenschaften an der LMU. Schwerpunktmassig beschaftigt er sich mit den ostindogermanischen Sprachen, insbesondere mit dem Indoiranischen. Sein Hauptinteresse liegt im Bereich des Lexikons auf Etymologie und Wortgeschichte, im Bereich der Syntax auf der Analyse von grammatischen Kategorien in typologischer und historischer Perspektive. Contributor Biography - English Dr. Mehr Ali Newid has a degree in Archaeology and Philology, with a minor in Byzantinie Studies and History of Art from Aristotle University (Thessaloniki). He went on for his post-graduate degree in Indology and Iranian Studies at Ludwig-Maximilians-University (Munich). He has studied Classical and Modern Greek, Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit, Classical Arabian, Old Persian, Avestan and Pahlavi. His primary scientific interest, besides the three variants of New Persian: Farsi, Dari and Tojiki, lies with the dialects Mazandarani, Khorasani, Kermani, Sistani (Zaboli), Herati, Hazaragi and Kaboli. He is fluent in Pashto and Balouchi. After receiving his doctorate, he taught and researched for many years at the Institute for Indology and Iranistics of the Munich University. He was also employed by the State Collections of Antiques and the State Museum for Ethnology, for whom he prepared several exhibitions, among others the exhibition on "The Art of Buddhism along the Silk Road." At the Institute for History and Culture of the Near East at LMU, his research focuses on new Iranian philology and Islamic history and culture. He has been on numerous field trips to Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Syria, Greece and Turkey. He has published several works on the culture and history of Persia and Afghanistan, most recently Der schiitische Islam in Bildern - Rituale und Heilige. A Pashto-German dictionary is under way.PD Dr. Peter-Arnold Mumm has been working for the Institute for Comparative and Indo-European Linguistics and Albanology, Ludwig-Maximilians-University (Munich) since 1989. As Indo-Europeanist he researches Indo-Iranian, Classical Greek, Armenian, Latin, Lithuanian, Old Germanic, Old Church Slavonic, Tocharian and other branches of the Indo-European language family, as a typologist he also studies non-Indo-European languages. He is the coordinator of the Centre for Historical Linguistics (CHL) at LMU. His primary scientific focus are the Eastern Indo-European languages, especially Indo-Iranian. His main interest lies in etymology and word history and in the analysis of grammatical categories in typological and historical perspective.
