A partir de las brillantes adaptaciones de Napoleon Bonaparte, los estrategas comenzaron a percibir el ambito intermedio que vinculaba los objetivos estrategicos nacionales con la tactica en el campo de batalla. El mariscal aleman Helmuth von Moltke desarrollo los primeros conceptos de la dimension operacional de la guerra y sus contemporaneos franceses buscaron una doctrina que los reconciliase con Napoleon y les evitase otro Sedan. Los rusos y sus sucesores sovieticos tambien desarrollaron una guerra de maniobra inspirada en las grandes extensiones de territorio que fue magistralmente aplicada durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Estados Unidos llegaria tarde a la asimilacion de lo operacional, aunque no por ello dejaria de estar presente en campanas como la de Gettysburg, en la Guerra de Secesion, la Guerra de Corea o, de forma mas clara, en las operaciones Escudo y Tormenta del Desierto de 1990-1991. Para el lector interesado en la historia militar, esta antologia le servira de aproximacion a importantes batallas y campanas del pasado. Mas alla del brillante manejo tactico que hizo Napoleon de sus divisiones en Jena, el lector tendra la posibilidad de considerar como afecto esta batalla, y toda la campana, a las estrategias francesa y prusiana. Incluso el dramatico choque en Gettysburg fue mucho mas que Little Round Top, Cemetery Ridge, Culp s Hill y la Carga de Pickett, especialmente cuando se analiza desde el punto de vista operacional. Del mismo modo, los Aliados se centraron tanto en el desembarco de Normandia que no dedicaron muchos esfuerzos a la planificacion de la operacion de ruptura desde las playas, perdiendo la oportunidad de asestar un golpe decisivo al ejercito aleman. Los sovieticos, tras los desastres iniciales de Barbarroja, consiguieron desarrollar su propio y exitoso arte operacional.
