Länder - Mittelalter, Frühe Neuzeit, Note: 2.0, Universität des Saarlandes (Geschichtswissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Geschichte verorten, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In dieser Arbeit wird sich mit der städtischen Pestbekämpfung an den Beispielen Basel und London auseinander gesetzt. Die besten Studien zu diesem Thema sind Annemarie Kinzelbachs "Gesundbleiben, Krankwerden, Armsein in der frühneuzeitlichen Gesellschaft" und Jean-Noël Birabens "Les hommes et la peste en France et dans les pays européens et méditerranéens". Sie befassen sich unter anderem mit der Ausbreitung der Seuche in Europa und deren Präventivmaßnahmen. Das wichtigste Werk für England ist Paul Slacks "The Impact of Plague in Tudor and Stuart England". Aus diesen vereinzelten Forschungsmeinungen geht ein Ergebnis hervor. Nach dem ersten Schock über die Pestkrise tritt eine verstärkte gesellschaftliche Aktivität hervor. Erst nach und nach traten die Maßnahmen der Obrigkeit, die je nach Ort variierten, ein. Daraufhin festigten sich die Strukturen. In dieser Arbeit werden am Anfang der medizinische Begriff stehen, das Krankheitsbild, die Übertragungswege, anschließend werden die Vorbeugungen und Maßnahmen gegen die Pest veranschaulicht. Im letzten Kapitel wird ein Vergleich zwischen den Städten Basel und London gezogen. In dieser Arbeit wird sich aber vorwiegend mit der Pestbekämpfung in den europäischen Städten auseinandergesetzt. Keine andere Krankheit hat im Laufe der Zeit so viel Angst, Schrecken und Verwüstung unter den Menschen verbreitet wie die Pest. In den Jahren 1347 bis 1352 starben schätzungsweise in Europa zwischen 20 und 25 Millionen Menschen an dieser Seuche. Eine Sterberate für die Frühe Neuzeit ist nicht bekannt. Der Mythos um das Massensterben bei den Pestzügen hat in gewisser Weise etwas Faszinierendes. Das verschafft ihm einen festen Platz in vielen literarischen Arbeiten, wie Albert Camus "La peste" oder Gio
