Apres les chants I a V, publies en 2006, Pierre Laurens nous donne dans ce tome II les quatre derniers chants (VI-IX) de l'Affrica, le chef-d'oeuvre poetique de Petrarque. Comme dans le tome precedent, l'edition est fondee sur le Laurentianus Acquisti et Doni 441, copie directe de l'autographe, qui, avec les annotations personnelles du poete devient pour la premiere fois la base d'une edition moderne.Le choix de la traduction rythmee est conforme a l'objectif initial de restaurer l'epopee en tant que grand texte poetique, les notes eclairent sources et allusions et commentent, en suivant l'apparat pas a pas, les repentirs de la redaction.Un court avertissement met en valeur les beautes (ainsi les fameuses plaintes de Magon a la fin du chant VI) qui scandent la deuxieme partie du recit, depuis le rappel d'Hannibal et l'affrontement des deux armees a Zama jusqu'au retour de la flotte romaine et au double couronnement du chef et du poete (Ennius) temoin et chantre de ses actions; surtout il releve l'importance des discours auxquels est confiee l'interpretation des evenements et le sens profond de l'epopee: telle, au chant VIII, la fameuse collatio ducum, ou la figure de Scipion, sublimee, est mise loin au-dessus d'Alexandre, le heros celebre par Geoffroy de Chatillon, et plus encore, au chant VII, prelude a l'affrontement decisif entre le Bien et la Mal, la Vertu et la Fraude, la promesse qu'au peuple vainqueur reviendra l'empire du monde, accompagnee de cette revelation stupefiante que le siege de l'Empire sera le siege du dieu supreme, une fois accompli le mystere de l'Incarnation.
