Il n'est pas exagere de dire que la correspondance latine de Petrarque - avant tout les vingt-quatre livres des Lettres familieres et les dix-huit livres des Lettres de la vieillesse - constitue le chef-d'oeuvre du Petrarque humaniste: reunissant, au sein meme de l'immense oeuvre latine, un grandiose corpus auquel l'ecrivain travailla jusqu'aux derniers mois de sa vie, elle peut etre lue aussi bien comme une autobiographie ideale du poete et un commentaire illuminant le reste de l'oeuvre que comme un miroir de l'histoire du Trecento et comme l'inventaire des grandes decouvertes philologiques qui, comme on sait, renouvelerent la culture, la conjuguerent a l'esprit de l'age classique, l'impregnerent de toutes les inquietudes de l'humanitas et la proposerent comme la base meme de la sensibilite occidentale.On sait que, paradoxalement et alors meme que la philologie petrarquienne parvenait a un niveau d'excellence quasiment vertigineux, l'edition europeenne, malgre plusieurs contributions majeures apparues au fil du xxe siecle - celles de Vittorio Rossi et Umberto Bosco pour les Lettres Familieres, de Nicola Festa pour l'Africa, de Giuseppe Billanovich pour les Rerum memorandarum libri, de Guido Martellotti pour la premiere partie de De viris - s'etait montree reticente a s'engager a fond dans la publication, autre que sporadique, du Petrarque latin. L'approche du septieme centenaire de la naissance du poete, en suscitant en Italie pour 2004 un nouvel et ambitieux elan, pilote par Michele Feo, en vue de l'edition nationale de l'oeuvre integrale, devrait aider a combler definitivement cette lacune. Reste qu'engagee dans un esprit de collaboration fraternelle avec nos amis italiens la presente edition bilingue constitue un evenement editorial de premiere grandeur.Ce sera en effet la premiere fois que les Lettres de Petrarque sont mises a la disposition du public francais dans leur integralite, lisibles d'un bout a l'autre a la fois dans le texte et dans une excellente traduction - benemeritus de l'oeuvre de Petrarque, Victor Develay a la fin du xixe siecle n'avait donne que des choix de lettres c'est la premiere fois aussi qu'un ample commentaire historique et erudit, eclipsant de loin et perimant les notes de Fracassetti (1865-1868), orientera le lecteur tant dans la saisie globale du complexe iter culturel et spirituel du poete que, livre apres livre et lettre apres lettre, dans la comprehension ponctuelle d'un texte toujours riche et passionnant. Enfin, c'est la premiere fois que le travail d'edition critique, deja accompli pour les Lettres familieres par Vittorio Rossi, sera etendu aux Lettres de la vieillesse.Redevables pour la traduction francaise des Familiares a la patience, a la competence et au gout d'Andre Longpre, nous avons confie celle des Seniles a un groupe de jeunes et ardents chercheurs formes en Sorbonne Ugo Dotti, un des meilleurs connaisseurs de la personnalite et de l'oeuvre de Petrarque, nous a fait l'honneur de nous donner pour les unes comme pour les autres le commentaire monumental qu'on lira dans la traduction francaise de Christophe Carraud et de Franck La Brasca. C'est Elvira Nota qui nous offre livre par livre, avec le texte critique des Seniles, les precieuses notes critiques relatives aux textes " pre-canoniques ".Ayant livre en guise de premices ces sept premiers livres des Lettres familieres, nous poursuivrons parallelement l'edition des deux grands ensembles du corpus en gardant les yeux fixes sur 2004, esperant meme pouvoir, chemin faisant, adjoindre, en Appendice au corps principal, les dix-neuf Sine nomine dans le texte critique de Paul Piur et, avec un texte critique etabli par Elvira Nota, les " Lettere disperse ", exclues du corpus et vulgarisees par une recente edition.Ainsi Les Belles Lettres et la collection des " Classiques de l'Humanisme " esperent-elles prendre leur part de la celebration d'une oeuvre a laquelle notre pays, depuis Pierre de Nolhac, ne s'est jamais senti ni voulu etranger.Pierre Laurens
