Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2014 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Weltgeschichte - Frühgeschichte, Antike, Note: 2,7, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Ein riesiges, mit Menschen gefülltes Stadion. Eine einfache Rennbahn umschließt imposante Statuen und Gebilde. Geschmückte Rennwagen werden zu einer Ehrenrunde in das Stadion geführt. Dann geht es los. Die neun Wagenlenker stürzen samt ihrer jeweils vier Pferde in das Rennen. Das Publikum, bestehend aus farbenfroh gekleideten Männern, jubelt vor Freude oder hält je nach Situation vor Spannung den Atem an. Charlton Heston, als jüdischer Fürst Judah Ben-Hur, leistet sich einen erbitterten Kampf um die Spitze mit seinem Erzfeind Mesalla. Dessen mit Stacheln bewaffnete Reifen, die seine Gegner zum stürzen bringen sollen, lassen ihn letztendlich selbst fallen und unter die Pferde geraten. Ben-Hur fährt durch das Ziel und gewinnt das Rennen. Die Zuschauer stürmen auf die Rennbahn, um ihren Helden zu feiern. Es ist die wohl bekannteste Szene des Film-Klassikers "Ben-Hur" von 1959. Ebenso ist es die wohl bekannteste Wagenrennen-Szene der Filmgeschichte. Diese von Tempo und Spannung bestimmte Szene ist das was viele Menschen, mich eingeschlossen, vor Augen haben, wenn es um antiken Pferdesport geht. Heutzutage laufen die Wettkämpfe im Pferdesport etwas anders ab, als es im Film dargestellt wird. In vielen Disziplinen geht es eher um Ästhetik und Anmut, als um Schnelligkeit. Diese Wettkämpfe ziehen viele Menschen in ihren Bann und sie gehören auch heute noch zum festen Bestandteil der olympischen Sommerspiele, die nach dem Vorbild der Antiken Olympischen Spiele ins Leben gerufen wurden. Diese Antiken Olympischen Spiele waren ein ähnliches Highlight, wie es heute noch die modernen Olympischen Spiele sind.
