März im Jahre 1592 als Sohn des angesehenen Bürgers Martin Komensky und seiner Frau Anna in der ostmährischen Ortschaft Nivnice geboren. Erst im Mannesalter ändert er seinen Namen in Johann Amos Comenius, unter dem er auch bekannt wird. Johann Amos Comenius ist die latinisierte Form seines Namens, wie es damals bei humanistischen Gelehrten üblich war. Er begegnet im Laufe seines Aufenthaltes an verschiedenen Universitäten nicht nur theologischen Lehrfragen, sondern kommt auch in Kontakt mit den Klassikern der Antike und mit der modernen Pädagogik des Johann Heinrich Alsted. Die Begegnung mit J.H. Alsted prägt J.A. Comenius besonders. J.H. Alsted glaubt, mit Hilfe seiner neuen Didaktik jedem alles beibringen zu können, wenn man nur den richtigen Weg des Lehrens und Lernens einhielte. J.A. Comenius verfolgt diesen Gedanken zeitlebens weiter und arbeitet ihn aus. Er nimmt die gesamte zeitgenössische Theologie, Philosophie und Naturwissenschaft in sein Denken auf. J.A. Comenius hat eine ambivalente Einstellung zur Pädagogik, die er nie als seine Hauptaufgabe sieht, die ihn aber doch immer wieder reizt. Die "Pansophie" steht vielmehr im Vordergrund seiner Interessen, in die er auch immer wieder Zeit investiert. Den größten Abschnitt seines Lebens, fünf Jahrzehnte, verbringt er auf Wanderschaft im Exil. Am 15. November 1670 stirbt J.A. Comenius achtundsiebzigjährig in Amsterdam (vgl. Flitner 1970, S.221ff).
