Zwei Dichter seien genannt, die sich mit diesem Thema beschäftigt haben: der vorchristliche Ovid in seinen "Metamorphosen", und Goethe in "Faust II"."Philemon und Baucis" heißt bei ihnen das alt gewordene Paar, das in seiner armseligen Hütte Zeus (in der griechischen Mythologie, Jupiter in der römischen), selbstlos aufgenommen und bewirtet hat. Als Dank dafür wird ihm u.a. ein dereinst unzertrennliches Fortleben als Eiche und Linde gewährt.Die Protagonisten in diesem Roman lernen sich spät im Leben kennen. Der blinde Horace und die leiderfahrene Ella nähern sich durch den Austausch gegenseitiger Erinnerungen an. Ella's Tochter Heather rührt die innige Altersliebe. Sie vergleicht das Paar mit "Philemon und Baucis". Den beiden Hochbetagten gefällt das Gleichnis. Sie wollen ihm folgen: durch Hinwendung zu anderen Menschen, durch Verzicht auf ererbten Wohlstand, durch Versöhnung mit der Vergangenheit, Akzeptanz der Gegenwart und Vertrauen in die verbleibende Zukunft. Mit dem Wunsch, dass auch sie für alle Zeiten unzertrennlich beieinander bleiben mögen.
About the Author: Anne Woodhouse wurde 1937 in Hannover geboren. Vater Großkaufmann, Mutter Fotografin. Zwei jüngere Brüder. Der Vater fällt im April 1945, im Südharz. Berufliche Stationen: Sekretärin beim Göttinger Symphonie-Orchester, im Sommer Kurorchester im Staatsbad Norderney; in der hannoverschen Staatsoper, in der hannoverschen Konzertdirektion Pro Musica. Dann mehr als 29 Jahre beim NDR-Fernsehen im Funkhaus Hannover, als Chefsekretärin, Redaktionsassistentin und Redakteurin, mit Schwerpunkt medizinische Berichterstattung. Ehrenamtlich tätig als Beirätin im Hospizverein des Bistums Hildesheim, gleichzeitig einige Jahre Sterbebegleiterin im Auftrag des Evangelischen Hospizvereins in Hannover. Hobby in den 70er Jahren: Ölmalerei, mit Ausstellungen vorwiegend in Langzeitkliniken und Pflegeheimen.
