Vorliegendes Werk ist die erste monographische Studie uber die Padmasa?hita (PadS), einen Sanskrit-Text sudindischer Herkunft, entstanden zwischen dem 12. und 13. Jahrhundert und der vai ava-tantrischen religiosen Tradition des Pancaratra zugehorig. Die Studie ist den philosophischen und theologischen Lehren der PadS sowie der Rolle des yoga im religiosen Leben und in den Ritualpraktiken der pancaratrin gewidmet. Im Rahmen der Theologie gesehen, gilt der Begriff der PadS bezuglich der Manifestation des Hochsten Wesens in seinen drei Urformen (rupa) - namlich der hochste Vasudeva, der Geist (puru?a) und die Materie (prak?ti) - als durch die Vorstellung des Yadavaprakasa (Ramanujas Lehrer) von der Entfaltung des brahman in seinen drei partikularen Konkretisierungen (a?sa) beeinflusst. Der relationale Aspekt des Gottlichen, der als Anwesenheit Gottes in der Meditation und in der rituellen Verehrung verwirklicht ist, wird ebenfalls analysiert und in seinen theologischen Aspekten dargestellt. Ein wichtiges in dem Werk diskutiertes Thema ist die Lehre von der Emanzipation: Eine altere Vorstellung - wonach die Emanzipation sich in vier Stadien entfaltet, die jeweils vom sozialen Rang der Verehrer abhangen - wird in der PadS harmonisiert mit einem spateren Begriff der Emanzipation als Vereinigung von Individualseelen und Hochster Seele. Im zweiten Teil des Werks, das dem yoga gewidmet ist, werden die Funktion der yogischen Disziplinen im vom yoga gepragten Ritualsystem der PadS sowie die Bedeutung der yogischen Meditation im religiosen Leben - insbesondere die psychologischen und heilbringenden Aspekte der Erfahrung von samadhi - analysiert. Schliesslich wird eine Ritualpraktik des yogischen Suizids diskutiert: Pancaratra- und Saiva-Texte liefern Beweise fur die Existenz einer Tradition, die den yogischen Suizid durch grundsatzlich ahnliche Methoden unterrichtet. In der PadS kann diese Ritualpraktik vom sadhaka vorgenommen werden, wenn er sich entscheidet, durch eine spezifische Kraft (siddhi) dem eigenen Leben ein Ende zu setzen, um die eigene Emanzipation zu beschleunigen.
