Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Das Gas Ozon ist je nach Ort seines Auftretens für völlig unterschiedliche Effekte verantwortlich. Die Ozonschicht in der Stratosphäre schützt durch Strahlungsabsorption den Menschen vor energiereicher ultravioletter Strahlung (Sonnenstrahlung mit Wellenlängen zwischen 240 und 320 nm). In den bodennahen Luftschichten der Troposphäre hingegen, also dem Lebensraum des Menschen, ist das Ozon wegen seiner starken Reizwirkung und Giftigkeit unerwünscht. Durch stetig steigende Stickoxid- und Kohlenwasserstoffemissionen und der daraus resultierenden Bildung von photochemischen Oxidantien, deren wichtigste Leitkomponente eben jenes Ozon ist, kommt es in Deutschland vor allem in den Sommermonaten zu dem sogenannten „Sommersmog". Die Diplomarbeit zeigt, dass Sommersmog keineswegs ein neuartiges Phänomen ist, wie es oft den Medien zu entnehmen ist. Bereits seit den 1940er Jahren ist photochemischer Smog aus Los Angeles bekannt, und in den 1970er Jahren wurden die ersten anthropogen erhöhten Ozonkonzentrationen in Mitteleuropa gemessen. Daß das Thema erst in den letzten Jahren verstärkt in der Öffentlichkeit und in der Politik diskutiert wird, liegt an einem veränderten gesellschaftlichen Umweltbewusstsein. Im Mittelpunkt der Darstellung des photochemischen Smogs steht das Ozon. Es ist hinsichtlich seines chemischen Verhaltens, seiner Immissionskonzentration und seiner Wirkung repräsentativ für eine ganze Reihe von Stoffen, die zu den Oxidantien des photochemischen Smogs gezählt werden. Nach einer Einführung in die Zusammensetzung und Gliederung der Erdatmosphäre werden zunächst die wichtigsten Luftverunreinigungen, unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Straßenverkehrs, als Emission und Immission vorgestellt. Hierbei wird der besondere Status des Ozons deutlich, das als Sekundärschadstoff nicht direkt emittiert, sondern aus Primärschadstoffen gebildet wird.
