About the Book

A Photograph Album of Trinidad At the turn of the 19th Century. The publication of these photographs was made possible mainly because Michael Pocock of Hastings, England, was given two splendid albums of old photographs of Trinidad that were in the collection of Miss Ruby Harding Findlayson, whose wish it was that they be returned to Trinidad. John Pocock very kindly allowed us to copy them. They are mostly of the 1890's and they form, in fact, the basis of this album. We wish therefore to express our gratitude to Michael and John Pocock for allowing us to reproduce them herein.

The Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Sienna very kindly arranged for us to copy an even older collection, that of the 1870's, and to them we extend our grateful thanks.

Our thanks go as well to Eric de Verteuil who allowed us to copy several photographs from his collection. Our gratitude is also extended to Marian Farfan for putting us in touch with him and also for making some important contributions.

Michael Anthony and Adrian Camps-Campins were both kind enough to give photographs from their collections and to look at and make constructive criticism of the book during its formative stage. Michael Anthony provided some of the research material that has gone into the captions. Thank you, Gentlemen.

Our appreciation to Sue Anne Gomes, Andrea McCarthy, Dolores Thompson, Bernardo Bermudez, Jeffrey Pataysingh and Harry Amarsingh for allowing us to reproduce photographs and other objects in their possession.

Mrs. Olga Mavrogordato very kindly allowed us to photocopy rare photographs and glass plates and to have a look at some Trinidad and Tobago Year Books compiled by James Henry Collens, Starke's 'Guide to Trinidad' and 'Isles of the West'. She guided and encouraged us throughout and words cannot really express the gratitude we feel for the kindness and generosity shown to us by this great lady.

To my wife Sheelagh, I would like to say thanks for her patience and for her positive encouragement and particularly for never allowing me to lose sight of the dream. Thanks to Helen Lewis for typesetting and Carlysle Fitzwilliam for photo-mechanicals.

Material has also come from Jackson's 'Book of Trinidad' and from Algernon Burket's 'Trinidad, A Jewel of the West', 'Two Years in the French West Indies' by L. Hearn, Charles Kingsley's 'At last, A Christmas in the West Indies', Harry Vincent's 'Sea Fish of Trinidad', Russel's 'Legends of the Bocas'and Dr. K.S. Wise's 'Historical Sketches, Volumes I and II'.

There are however, some to whom we owe a special tribute, an honour in fact, and they are the men and women who pioneered the art of photography here in Trinidad in the 19th Century: Charles Cazabon, brother of the painter, Prof. H. Marshall, Felix Morrin, Henry Savignac, W. Whiteman, J.CA. Macedo, L.F. Seffier, J.J. Donatien and Miss Philippa Bart. To them we must say thanks for work that was done here in Trinidad more than 100 years ago.
