As a child, Trinese Robinson longed to be a princess in a castle. She didn't live in a magic kingdom, however. She lived in Oakland, California. No prince would rescue her to ride off into the sunset. She worked hard for everything she received in life.
In this inspirational tale of challenge and courage, Robinson recounts the physical and emotional traumas she had to overcome in order to live the life she wanted. While certainly no fairy tale, the story definitely has a hero-Robinson herself.
Opening up about the darkest moments of her life, Robinson relates how her beloved grandmother was murdered by her step-uncle, when Robinson was very young and how her own husband and sons fell victim to gun violence, describing the terrifying attack that took her husband's life-and the years of depression that followed.
Enduring a terrible family legacy, Robinson lost three grandparents to cancer, shared her sister's suffering through a leg amputation and subsequent breast cancer, and was herself diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago, and is still fighting cancer.
But despite these and other obstacles, Robinson didn't give up. Her story underscores that maintaining faith and optimism through even the most difficult circumstances is necessary-and achievable.
