About the Book

The Pink Envelope weaves mystery into the lives of two romantic Mississippi River Boat dancers. Both Jason and Ann Marie want to establish a home and have children. But Ann Marie first wants to dance to prove herself worthy of her father's love. Both harbor deep secrets they cannot share with each other. When she asks her father, "Who is Albert," her father threatens, "If you mention that name one more time, you will no longer be welcome in this house." Jason cannot share his horrific nightmares with Ann Marie. Each time he receives a Pink Envelope, he destroys the unread contents. Ann Marie believes the letters from his mother might explain the reason for his nightmares, and possibly explain why he almost drops her during an exebition dance routine. Unable to reconcile their differences, and wanting to escape his mother's letters, Jason plans to join the Navy Air corp. But Ann Marie's announcement that she is pregnant thrills Jason to changing his plans. He proposs to her during a dance routine and they marry. But Ann Marie's discovery that she is not pregnant causes Jason to believe she lied to him to keep him from enlisting. Heartbroken, Jason leaves for the Naval Air Base. Ann Marie remains on board the boat and takes a new dance partner, Tommy. Though he has fallen in love with Ann Marie, Tommy encourages her to go to Jason and try to resolve their differences. On the way to join Jason she has to detour when she receives word that her brother died in the Hartford circus fire. Finally arriving at the Naval base, they resolve their differences before Jason ships out. Jason's plane was shot down over Iraq and he was taken prisoner. While watching the evening newscast, she thinks she hears her name mentioned. With a closer look at the TV screen, she recognizes Jason among other airmen riding across the desert sand in a jeep. Jason's coming home and Ann Marie needs to know why the unopened letters from his mother upset him. She opens and reads the most recent letter and leaves it where he can see it to read. Jason returns to the States with a serious leg injury inflicted by many months of torture in the Iraqi prison camp. Unable to do exhibition dancing he and Ann Marie rebuild their lives around his limitations and do what they do best. Ann Marie realizes her dream with the opening of the Guys and Dolls dance studio.
