About the Book

America's first Calendar Girl turns 90 and tells her story. A century in a nutshell.
About the Author: It all began back in 1948 when Ruth won a national contest. At the time, she was working as a swimsuit model for the Jantzen Company in Portland, Oregon when the Brown and Bigelow Company one of the largest calendar producers in the world, discovered her. Unbeknownst to Ruth her swimsuit designer heard of the contest being run as a promotional event by Brown and Bigelow and Republic Pictures (who produced the 1948 movie "Calendar Girl"). She secretly entered Ruth in the contest, and out of 2768 contestants Ruth took first place, becoming "Miss Calendar Girl of America". It was fast forward from there and the company immediately arranged for Gil Elvgren, a leading artist known for his petty girl pinup paintings, to paint Ruth. After many paintings and poses the famous work entitled "The Honeymoon is Over: (A Good Man's Hard to Find - Once You Marry Him)" emerged. After that the engines really revved up and Ruth spent the next few years in the pin-up limelight. She appeared everywhere as a beautiful lady penetrating the hearts of men all over the world. From business executives to lonely G.I.'s in their foxholes Ruth's sexy images grabbed them at the very fabric of what attracts men to women. Letters flooded in from love struck romantics, and no matter how high the stack of fan mail Ruth was always diligent to answer each and every one. At 90 she continues to busy herself by creating lovely ceramic pieces and paintings that depict even more of the productive soul that she is. But it is her adventurous spirit that sets her apart from the crowd. In 1991 she set out on her first horseback safari across the flat grasslands of Kenya with seven other people. At age 67 she was embarking on her first horseback trek in Africa, and it was that expedition that kindled her desire to continue making mounted excursions into the wilds around the world. Ruth admits that she lived with an intense fear of horses most of her life (she did not begin horseback riding until she was 58) and overcame it to begin a new phase in her long exciting life. The challenge was there, and she went for it-as she has always done.
