About the Book

Our Lady of Providence High School was never as big as many of the area public schools, but a deep-seeded determination among its athletic teams and their loyal fans provided amazing growth in the rich athletic soil of southern Indiana - yes, basketball country. Located along the north shore of the Ohio River in Clark County, and labeled the Providence Pioneers, the resulting Blue Pride permeated the school's every athletic endeavor. The same tradition inspired the authors, both 1957 graduates of the school, to compile the story of their alma mater's 66-years of basketball program, both boys and girls, from 1951 to 2017. Over 200 photos spread across 240 pages bring the lively text to life. This beautiful book, A Pioneering Spirit, deserves a place on every basketball lover's coffee table or bookshelf.
About the Author: Charles J. "Charlie" Jenkins was born in New Albany, Indiana, raised in Hamburg, and attended Providence High School in Clarksville. He spent a lifetime in radio broadcasting in southern Indiana and the metro-Louisville market, working in all facets of the industry, including station ownership, management, sales, news, sports, and on-air work. Known as the "voice of southern Indiana sports" for 54 years, Charlie often accompanied his "on air" presence with a sports-journalism career covering high school sports throughout Clark and Floyd counties. Compiling this history of the basketball program at Providence is a fitting climax to his lifelong sports reporting career. Raymond P. "Ray" Day was born and raised in New Albany, Indiana. As teacher, theatre director and development director at Providence, he continues to this day as the school's volunteer archivist. As a professional watercolorist and sculptor, his published prints and Lilliput Lane sculptures are collected worldwide. He revels in researching family genealogy and Providence history. He is the author of These Are The Good Old Days published in 2013 and available on Amazon.com. Ray's passion for bringing the past to life for those who are too young to remember has kept him very active in retirement.
