L'origine de la piraterie, c'est l'origine même de la navigation. Dans les temps anciens, pirates et navigateurs étaient deux mots synonymes. La piraterie apparaît dès les premiers âges de la société humaine. Cet ouvrage recherche les véritables causes de son existence dans l'antiquité. Il rappelle quels furent les besoins de la piraterie antique et son industrie. - La piraterie à l'époque hellénistique: Les auteurs antiques grecs comme Homère ou Hérodote, aussi bien dans leurs récits historiques que mythologiques, écrivent sur cette période au cours de laquelle commerce, piraterie et navigation vont ensemble. Ainsi les Phéniciens sont considérés tout à la fois comme des marchands et des pirates, Ménélas explique l'origine de sa fortune par des pillages en règle. - La piraterie à l'époque égyptienne: Les Égyptiens de l'Antiquité sont victimes des Peuples de la mer (ou Peuples du Nord), groupes de différents peuples venus attaquer sans succès à au moins deux reprises la région du delta, sous les règnes de Mérenptah et de Ramsès III. - La piraterie à l'époque romaine: Jusqu'au Ier siècle av. J.-C., les pirates sont les principaux fournisseurs de Rome pour son marché aux esclaves et sont donc tolérés. Avec le développement de la piraterie qui n'hésite pas à piller des villes (notamment la Cilicie qui forme un véritable État piratique, plusieurs villes de l'Empire romain concluant avec lui des traités bilatéraux pour leur éviter le pillage), comme en 67 av. J.-C. qui voit le port de Rome d'Ostie incendié et deux éminents sénateurs romains enlevés, Rome se met à les redouter tellement que Cicéron appelle les pirates Communis hostis omnium, ennemis commun de tous qui n'hésitent pas à utiliser leurs captifs comme rançon, tel Jules César attaqué dans sa galère romaine à destination de Rhodes.
