Ein Produkt bzw. eine Dienstleistung wird von Konsumenten als individuelle Befriedigung eines Bedürfnisses gesehen. Die Entscheidung für oder gegen ein Produkt wird auf der Grundlage von persönlichen Emotionen getroffen. Die Wahl der passenden Strategie ist elementar für den Erfolg eines Unternehmens und bedarf dementsprechend einer genauen Planung. Der darauf folgenden Realisierung liegt eine konsequente Verfolgung der gewählten Strategie zugrunde, um so die gewünschten Ziele zu realisieren. Unternehmen müssen sich entscheiden, wie sie ihre Absatzmärkte beeinflussen wollen, um so die vorab formulierten Marketingziele erreichen zu können. Grundsätzlich hat ein Unternehmen zwei Möglichkeiten der Marktstimulierung: den Preiswettbewerb einerseits und den Qualitätswettbewerb andererseits. Der Qualitätswettbewerb wird in Form der sogenannten Präferenzstrategie geführt. Im Rahmen dieser Präferenzstrategie werden alle absatzpolitischen Instrumente so aufeinander abgestimmt, dass der wahrgenommene Nutzen beim Konsumenten erhöht wird. Insbesondere durch den Einsatz aller nicht-preislichen Instrumente soll eine Vorzugsstellung auf dem Absatzmarkt erreicht werden, um so einen möglichst hohen Preis zu erzielen. Dabei gilt es, funktional ähnliche Produkte durch gezielte Maßnahmen zu individualisieren, um sie so von der Konkurrenz abzugrenzen.
