A l'epoque ou les premiers editeurs commencaient a recueillir les oeuvres de Platon, circulaient sous le nom du philosophe bon nombre de dialogues dont personne n'admettait l'authenticite: deja Diogene Laerce citait une douzaine de textes figurant dans la collection platonicienne, mais d'evidence d'une main autre que celle du maitre. Leur attribution varie, mais tous sont regardes soit comme suspects, soit comme apocryphes. Ils font partie des nothoi, les illegitimes, auxquels on attribue d'ordinaire une double origine. Les dialogues dits suspects sont l'oeuvre d'academiciens essayant de rivaliser avec l'auteur de la Republique, tandis que les dialogues apocryphes sont beaucoup plus tardifs: ecrits entre le IV et le Ier siecle, ils ont probablement ete composes par des sophistes desireux de beneficier de l'aura du philosophe pour faire passer leurs propres idees. Notre edition rassemble en deux tomes l'ensemble de ces textes. Le premier volume presente les dialogues dits suspects, comme Le Second Alcibiade, Hipparque, Minos ou Les Rivaux, tandis que le deuxieme volume regroupe les dialogues apocryphes, Du Juste, De la Vertu, Demodocos, Sisyphe, Eryxias, et les Definitions. L'introduction donne une vue d'ensemble de l'histoire originale de ces textes divers, tant par leur date de composition que par leur theme et leur valeur litteraire. Chaque traite est precede d'une notice qui lui est propre. Celle-ci fait le point sur les possibles attributions du texte et fournit toutes les informations historiques ou philosophiques, necessaires a la bonne intelligence du dialogue. L'histoire du texte est relatee et accompagnee d'une breve recapitulation des manuscrits. L'ouvrage est en outre assorti de notes eclairant la lecture et proposant de precieux paralleles avec l'ensemble du corpus platonicien.
