Dans l'Athenes classique, gouverner c'est parler: non seulement aux assemblees, mais aussi aux tribunaux, la parole est souveraine. Etre eloquent est donc essentiel au citoyen. Moyennant des salaires exorbitants, les sophistes se font fort d'enseigner aux jeunes gens les secrets de l'art oratoire, si bien que le pouvoir du discours se confond avec celui de l'argent. De ce pouvoir, Socrate est le contradicteur ironique. Le voici aux prises avec le celebre sophiste Gorgias, puis avec le jeune Callicles. Si les protagonistes s'interrogent d'abord sur la nature de la rhetorique, un art du mensonge selon Platon, le debat s'oriente par la suite sur la vertu, theme developpe dans Menon, deuxieme dialogue de ce volume. Eleve de Gorgias, Menon s'interroge sur la possibilite d'enseigner la vertu. Socrate repond par la fameuse theorie de la reminiscence: savoir c'est se souvenir. Gorgias et Menon constituent la deuxieme partie du tome III de notre edition des oeuvres Completes de Platon, et vient achever la trilogie sophistique ouverte avec Protagoras. Les deux textes sont sans doute contemporains de Protagoras et ont du etre ecrits entre 395 et 390, lorsque Platon revient a Athenes apres ses grands voyages. Les deux dialogues sont essentiels: le debat avec Callicles, le mythe des Enfers, l'esclave devenant geometre grace a la maieutique de Socrate, autant de morceaux d'anthologie que le lecteur trouvera dans ce volume. Chaque texte est precede d'une notice introductive contenant, entre autres informations, une breve presentation de la rhetorique dans l'Athenes classique. Les enjeux philosophiques et litteraires, ainsi que les personnages sont analyses en detail, notamment Callicles l'immoraliste, jeune, riche et ambitieux, demon tentateur forge par Platon, peut-etre en souvenir de ce qu'il aurait pu lui-meme devenir s'il n'avait croise Socrate. Un sommaire permet en outre de circuler aisement dans le texte tandis que l'histoire de la traduction manuscrite est brievement evoquee. L'ouvrage est en outre assorti de notes qui accompagnent la lecture. Texte etabli et traduit par A. Croiset avec la collaboration de L. Bodin.
