About the Book

A bitter-sweet memoir in the style of Jean Shepherd, PLAYING WITH FIRE hearkens us back to the 1950s, when neighborhoods were not yet the 'hoods, ' when fathers worked all the livelong day and mothers baked cookies over the hot stove in the kitchen, and when kids were set free every day to explore the dark world of bullies; of the dozens of unleashed German shepherds, bulldogs, and other Hounds of the Baskervilles roaming the streets; and of the 'off-limits' hot-spots like the cave, the cliffs, the dams, and the trestle (all with no more than a cheerful, "Just don't forget to be back home by bedtime, Honey!"). Somehow, in spite of all this, a handful of us baby-boomers managed to survive. This is the story of one of them...
About the Author: Baby Boomer Tom Lyford (1946- ) was born and raised in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine (pop. about 5000 at the time). He went to the local schools, graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1964, attended (and received his B.S. in Education from) Farmington (Maine) State College. In 1966, he married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Raymond (who was a knock-out in her majorette uniform!). Between 1968 and 1972, they were blessed by two daughters and a son: Melissa, Kathryn, and Christopher respectively. For thirty-four years, Tom taught high school English in the Maine towns of Belfast, Mexico, and Dover-Foxcroft; he served in the Army National Guard as an instructor of Combat Engineer subjects between 1969 and 1974. Some of the many hobbies he distracted himself with along the way include amateur radio, computer programming, photography, directing theater, and motorcycling, but his main avocation has always been creative writing. Quite a few of his poems and an essay or two have found their way into the pages of New England magazines and journals. To date Tom has published five poetry chapbooks, a full collection of poems, and a previous humorous memoir titled WORK AVERSION TRAUMA: A LIFETIME OF SUFFERING. Besides writing much of the time, Tom visits many nearby schools, nursing homes, civic groups, and churches to do readings and assemblies, perform a little stand-up comedy, and provide writing workshops. In his retirement, he really enjoys working part-time behind the big counter at Thompson Free Library in his hometown of Dover-Foxcroft.
