About the Book

Esta antología de Poemas de César Vallejo reúne la totalidad de su poesía publicada hasta el presente. Vallejo es una de las voces poéticas más singulares de Latinoamérica. Desde sus inicios modernistas, adoptó un tono intimista de fuerte carga social, con una honda preocupación por el desvalimiento y el sufrimiento de sus semejantes. Su lenguaje se abre a la experimentación, con diversos registros y con la peculiaridad de plasmar poéticamente una suerte de proceso anímico hermético, a la vez que cargado de reclamo de las libertades del individuo.

En su primer periodo escribe Los heraldos negros (1918), con algunos poemas de logros expresivos notables. Después, más influido por las corrientes artísticas y literarias vanguardistas, Vallejo escribirá un libro que aún hoy sigue causando admiración: Trilce (1922). Póstumamente aparecieron España, aparta de mí este cáliz (1939), libro de tono admonitorio contra la injusticia ante la evidencia de la derrota republicana, Poemas en prosa (1928-1938), Poemas humanos (1932-1937), y otros versos aparecidos en antologías. De ellos, y junto a Trilce, quizá es Poemas humanos el que contiene los poemas más representativos de su innovador registro poético, así como de su peculiar visión social y humana, de rasgos apocalípticos y desesperanzados respecto al tipo de sociedad alienada e injusta que veía aproximarse.

Los Poemas humanos de César Vallejo, fueron escritos entre 1931 y 1937, y publicados en París en 1939 por Georgette Vallejo, viuda del poeta, junto a los Poemas en prosa y España, aparta de mí este cáliz. Tras la edición parisina de 1939 aparecieron otras ediciones: Poesías completas. 1918-1938, con recopilación, prólogo y notas de César Miró (Buenos Aires, Editorial Losada, 1949). Y en 1968, Georgette publicó la Obra poética completa, junto a los manuscritos originales en facsímiles; allí fueron organizados los poemas póstumos de Vallejo en el orden siguiente:


Poemas en prosa (1923-1929),

Poemas humanos (1931-1937), y

España, aparta de mí este cáliz (1937)

En 1988 apareció otra edición de la poesía de Vallejo, bajo el título de César Vallejo. Obra poética, edición crítica coordinada por Américo Ferrari que optó por agrupar los poemas póstumos de Vallejo (Poemas de París) bajo los epígrafes de Poemas póstumos I y Poemas póstumos II.

Sin embargo, la distribución impuesta por la edición de Francisco Moncloa Editores, de 1968, sigue siendo la más citada.
