Este primer tomo de la Poesía completa de José Lezama Lima contiene las obras de su primera etapa. En ellas Lezama construye su concepción de la poesía. La trayectoria poética de Lezama se inicia muy pronto, cuando apenas cuenta veintisiete años. En 1937 publicó un extenso poema, que había compuesto años atrás, y que lleva por título Muerte de Narciso.

Muerte de Narciso, en su particular universo, expresa y contiene su propuesta estética. En él el autor dialoga con la herencia literaria que lo inspira en la búsqueda de nuevos horizontes de expresión. Lezama manifiesta a través de la imagen de Narciso la construcción de un linaje poético y de una expresión auténtica y propia.

Este poema hace equivalencias entre la concepción estética de Góngora y la de Valéry, centrada en el lenguaje poético. Reivindica también la figura de Garcilaso De la Vega como emblema de la actitud del poeta y retoma la negación de la actitud narcisista, tal como lo hacen las fuentes clásicas del mito.

Narciso, el joven enamorado de su imagen, el poeta, atraviesa el espejo para construir su propio ascenso, su propia concepción de la literatura.

Después vendrán el resto los poemarios aquí reunidos:

  • Enemigo rumor (1941),
  • Aventuras sigilosas (1945),
  • y La fijeza (1949).

El agua es uno de los elementos centrales en Enemigo rumor como lo es en Muerte de Narciso. Esto, llevado a un plano metafísico, se puede interpretar como un deseo posesivo de conocimiento poético. Sin embargo, éste es un deseo que nace frustrado, porque la poesía, como el agua, no se deja atrapar, se

escapa en el instante en el que alcanza su mejor definición.

En Aventuras sigilosas Lezama se mantiene dentro de las coordenadas de la realidad poética de sus obras anteriores. Sin embargo, en este libro se aprecian ya los primeros signos del sistema poético lezamiano. El texto tiene una especie de introducción, titulada El Puerto, en la que se plasman los elementos centrales que después serán poetizados:

  • la madre,
  • la esposa,
  • el hijo
  • y las mujeres.

La fijeza es un paso más allá en el camino que recorre Lezama. Avanza en su intento de hacer de la poesía un sistema que nos revele un mundo nuevo, cuya causalidad es la de las conexiones poéticas.

Queremos terminar comentando que no hemos querido prologar nuestras ediciones de Lezama Lima. Creemos que la obra de un autor como el nuestro no obedece a una perspectiva única. En todo caso publicaremos una bibliografía sugiriendo a los lectores los mejores ensayos de interpretación que sobre Lezama se han escrito.

La Poesía completa de José Lezama Lima deberá acompañarse algún día con una biografía de Lezama, libro necesario y actualmente inexistente.
