Si bien las temáticas luctuosas, oscuras y de horror estuvieron presentes en la poesía occidental desde sus mismos orígenes, no sería sino hasta el Romanticismo que el gusto por la oscuridad se generalizaría y pasaría a formar parte de la estética de un movimiento entero. Partiendo de la balada de terror y sus escalofriantes escenas, el horror y los sentimientos mórbidos cautivarían a los autores románticos, tanto a los cultores de la poesía lírica como a los baladistas, y seguirían en lo sucesivo resultando una influencia insoslayable para las diferentes escuelas posrománticas y para toda la posterior literatura de horror. Este volumen, que nos lleva de la balada alemana al decadentismo francés, nos ofrece un panorama bastante completo de la importancia que estos temas tuvieron en las letras del siglo XIX.
