Möchte ich in einem kulturellen und wirtschaftlichen Zentrum, oder in der bedächtigen und ruhigen Peripherie leben? Möchte ich die neueste Handytechnik besitzen oder reicht mir mein Festnetz? ... Diese privaten und sehr subjektiven Fragen spiegeln allerdings das Thema dieser Arbeit wider. Es gibt nun einmal im Raum (sei es ein Kontinent, ein Land, oder eine Region) keine gleichen Lebensbedingungen für alle Individuen. Der von der neoklassischen Wirtschaftstheorie beschriebene Gleichheitsmechanismus, wird in der Realität nirgends zu finden sein. Aufgrund empirischer Untersuchungen hat sich als Gegenbewegung zur Neoklassik die Polarisationstheorie entwickelt. Und aus ihren Ideen und Begrifflichkeiten die "New Economic Geography" bedient. Diese beiden Theorien, oder zumindest theoretischen Ansätzen zur Regionalökonomik, werden in dieser Arbeit näher beschrieben und bewertet. Zunächst wird es eine kurze geschichtliche Einordnung beider Theorien geben, bevor dann im 3. Kapitel die polarisationstheoretischen Annahmen denen der neoklassischen gegenüber gestellt und letztendlich die wichtigsten Wissenschaften von PERROUX, HIRSCHMAN und MYRDAL erläutert werden. Im 4. Kapitel wird die vom Ökonomen Paul KRUGMAN entwickelte "New Economic Geography" vorgestellt, die allerdings anders als der Name vermuten ließe eine neue neoklassische Wirtschaftstheorie darstellt, die im Grunde starke Ähnlichkeiten zur Polarisationstheorie aufweist, wenngleich differenzierte Betrachtungen zum Verständnis nötig sind.
